The mandate seeks to strengthen device traceability, streamline reporting of lost or stolen phones, and prevent unauthorized reactivation. With digital security concerns rising across the country, authorities are pushing for tighter coordination between handset makers and telecom systems.

The Indian government has announced that the Sanchar Saathi mobile application will now come pre-installed on new smartphones sold in the country. The app, developed to enhance mobile user security, helps verify the legitimacy of SIM cards, track mobile numbers, and prevent misuse. Authorities aim to bolster telecom security, protect user data, and simplify regulatory compliance for consumers and operators. Telecom experts note that pre-installation ensures wider adoption, strengthens fraud prevention mechanisms, and aligns with India’s broader digital governance initiatives.

India's Sanchar Saathi platform, a key digital initiative by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has successfully helped trace more than 20 lakh lost or stolen mobile devices, reinforcing the government’s commitment to securing its digital infrastructure. Minister of State for Telecommunications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani highlighted the platform’s achievements during a recent review meeting, revealing that over 33.5 lakh phones have been blocked through the system, with nearly 4.64 lakh returned to their rightful owners.
