VECV to Invest ₹544 Crore in Advanced AMT Manufacturing Facility in Madhya Pradesh

VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd (VECV), a joint venture between Volvo Group and Eicher Motors, has announced an investment of ₹544 crore to set up a new greenfield manufacturing facility in Madhya Pradesh. The plant will produce 12-speed Automated Manual Transmissions (AMTs) for heavy-duty trucks, catering to both domestic and select international markets within the Volvo Group’s network. This strategic move enhances India’s role as a manufacturing hub for advanced automotive technology and supports VECV’s commitment to localisation, efficiency, and technological innovation in the commercial vehicle segment.

Strengthening India’s Automotive Manufacturing Ecosystem

The investment marks a significant step toward self-reliance in high-value automotive components, a domain historically dominated by imports. By bringing AMT manufacturing to India, VECV aims to reduce its dependency on global supply chains, optimise production costs, and ensure greater operational control. The company’s decision aligns closely with the government’s “Make in India” initiative, positioning India as a global centre for advanced vehicle technology.

According to industry observers, this move demonstrates how domestic automakers are evolving from assembly-based operations to high-precision manufacturing. It further reflects the industry’s shift toward automation and efficiency, key to maintaining competitiveness amid tightening emissions norms and increasing demand for fuel-efficient transport solutions.

Facility Details and Production Capacity

The new AMT plant will be located at Vikram Udyogpuri Integrated Industrial Township near Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, a strategic location chosen for its proximity to VECV’s existing manufacturing base in Pithampur. The facility is expected to begin operations in phases, with an initial capacity of around 40,000 units per year.

The plant will manufacture 12-speed Automated Manual Transmissions — a technology that combines the efficiency of manual gearboxes with the convenience of automatic systems. These transmissions will primarily serve VECV’s heavy-duty truck range in India and be exported to selected Asia–Oceania markets under the Volvo Group umbrella.

By producing these complex transmissions locally, VECV will reduce its import dependency while developing in-house expertise in automation and drivetrain engineering, a crucial step in its long-term product innovation strategy.

Strategic Significance for VECV and the Industry

VECV’s latest investment is not merely an expansion of capacity; it is a technological leap. The introduction of AMT systems in heavy trucks enhances driver comfort, reduces fatigue, and improves fuel efficiency — critical factors for fleet operators facing rising operating costs. Moreover, the move positions VECV to compete more effectively with global manufacturers who already leverage such advanced systems.

For Volvo Group, this facility also deepens its supply chain integration within India, supporting its regional sourcing and sustainability goals. Industry analysts suggest that the localisation of advanced transmission systems could open the door for exports and future collaborations in electric and hybrid drivetrain technologies.

Broader Implications and Outlook

This investment underscores the growing confidence of multinational joint ventures in India’s manufacturing ecosystem. Beyond capital infusion, it signifies a commitment to technological upgradation, skill development, and long-term sustainability.

As automation continues to redefine global manufacturing standards, VECV’s AMT facility stands as a testament to India’s capability to produce high-precision, export-grade automotive components. With an eye on both domestic growth and global competitiveness, this initiative is likely to strengthen India’s standing in the global commercial vehicle value chain.
