NIA Makes First Arrest in Red Fort Blast Case — Aide of Doctor Linked to Car Bombing Detained

In a major development, India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made its first arrest in the Red Fort blast case: Amir Rashid Ali, identified as a close associate of the alleged suicide bomber, Dr. Umar Nabi. Investigators say Ali helped acquire the Hyundai i20 car that exploded near Delhi’s Red Fort on November 10, acting as a key conspirator. Forensic analysis established that the vehicle was used as an improvised explosive device (IED), and the remains of the driver have been confirmed to be those of Dr. Nabi, a medical academic. Authorities continue to unravel a complex terror network spanning multiple states.

First Arrest Marks Breakthrough in Red Fort Bombing Probe

The NIA has arrested Amir Rashid Ali, whom the agency describes as a key aide of Dr. Umar Nabi, the man believed to have driven the IED-laden Hyundai that exploded near Red Fort on November 10. According to NIA, Ali facilitated the vehicle’s purchase in Delhi and helped convert it into the device used in the attack.

His detention is viewed as a “major breakthrough,” offering the anti-terror agency its first concrete lead in a probe that spans multiple states.

Car Registration and Forensic Confirmation

The Hyundai i20 involved in the blast was registered to Ali, according to NIA records. Forensic investigation has confirmed that the car’s driver was Dr. Umar Nabi, an assistant professor at Al-Falah University in Faridabad.

In addition, investigators have seized a second vehicle reportedly owned by Dr. Nabi, which is being examined for further links to the attack.

Scope of the Terror Network Under Investigation

The NIA’s case narrative suggests that Dr. Nabi was not acting alone. Authorities allege he was connected to a “white-collar terror module,” implicating other medical professionals. Key suspects include Dr. Muzammil Ganaie, who is reported to have carried out reconnaissance missions near Red Fort earlier this year.

Explosive materials were also recovered in raids linked to this network, indicating the presence of a broader, potentially well-funded terror infrastructure.

Legal Proceedings and Next Steps

Following his arrest, Ali was placed under 10-day NIA custody by a Delhi court. The agency has already interviewed more than 70 witnesses, including blast survivors, as part of its deepening investigation.

Multiple state agencies — including police from Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh — are coordinating with the NIA to trace the full network involved in the attack.

Conclusion

The arrest of Amir Rashid Ali signals a critical juncture in the NIA’s investigation of the Red Fort car bombing. By linking the vehicle to a wider terror conspiracy and confirming the identity of the driver as Dr. Umar Nabi, agencies are now better positioned to map out the network behind the attack. As the probe advances, authorities will be looking to unravel who else was involved, how the plot was financed, and what the broader operational objectives were.
