Platform X Faces Technical Glitch Amid Government-Ordered Account Bans in India

By Kirti Srinivasan , 26 May 2025

Social media platform X—formerly known as Twitter—faced a widespread technical disruption around 6 p.m. today, leaving thousands of users unable to access services across desktop and mobile. At its peak, more than 2,200 complaints were logged on outage tracker DownDetector. The interruption, now resolved, occurred as the platform grapples with legal pressure from the Indian government to block over 8,000 accounts. X has complied with the directive under protest, warning it threatens the right to free speech and could expose employees to significant penalties. The company has yet to release an official statement on either the outage or the blocking order.

Platform X Outage Disrupts Services Globally

Platform X users around the world experienced a sudden service blackout early this evening. The outage began at approximately 6 p.m. IST, affecting both desktop and mobile users. Reports surged rapidly on DownDetector, a popular real-time outage monitoring tool, with over 2,200 users reporting access issues during the peak.

Key functions such as signing in, refreshing timelines, and sending direct messages were disabled. Many users also encountered broken links while attempting to access profiles and embedded content, leading to widespread frustration across digital communities.

Though the disruption was brief, it highlighted the platform’s vulnerability to technical faults, particularly as it handles increasing regulatory scrutiny and backend changes under new ownership.

Full Restoration Achieved, but Silence on Cause Persists

Shortly after user complaints surged, X’s services gradually resumed. The platform is now operating normally across all interfaces. However, no formal communication has been issued by the company regarding the cause or nature of the disruption.

Such unexplained outages are not uncommon in the digital infrastructure landscape, but the timing—coinciding with major policy enforcement actions in India—has invited speculation. Until an official statement is provided, questions remain about whether the incident was purely technical or entangled with broader operational shifts.

Government Directive Sparks Free Speech Debate

In a related development, X confirmed it is enforcing a directive from the Indian government to block over 8,000 user accounts within the country. The move, reportedly carried out under threat of financial penalties and potential incarceration of local staff, has raised concerns about censorship and the erosion of digital freedoms.

The platform disclosed that many of the targeted accounts belong to international media organizations and prominent public figures. Moreover, in numerous cases, the government did not specify the content that allegedly violated local laws, nor did it provide sufficient documentation to justify the takedowns.

"These executive orders compel us to act under duress, with threats of fines and imprisonment, despite the lack of clarity or evidence," X stated, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and civil liberties.

A Delicate Balancing Act Between Compliance and Integrity

This latest standoff underscores the increasingly complex regulatory environment for global tech platforms operating in sovereign jurisdictions. For X, navigating India’s tightening content rules has become particularly contentious, especially given the platform’s positioning as a space for unfiltered public discourse.

At the heart of the matter lies the balance between lawful compliance and the defense of fundamental rights—most notably, freedom of expression. X’s partial compliance, coupled with public disclosure of its opposition, reflects a broader strategy employed by multinational tech firms: to meet legal obligations while publicly challenging what they deem overreach.

Looking Ahead: Digital Governance Under Scrutiny

As digital platforms face mounting regulatory interventions worldwide, the case of X in India may well become a benchmark for future policy debates. The dual crises of today—technical failure and political censorship—signal a broader need for resilience, transparency, and a renewed focus on platform governance.

For now, users can scroll, tweet, and message as usual. But beneath the surface, the battle over who controls online speech—and under what conditions—continues to intensify.
