Murder in the Hills: New Arrests in the Raja Raghuvanshi Homicide Case Reveal Disturbing Cover-Up Plot

By Gurleen Bajwa , 23 June 2025

In a chilling development in the murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, Meghalaya Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested two more suspects in Madhya Pradesh, raising the total number of arrests to seven. The arrests include a property dealer and a security guard, allegedly involved in destroying critical evidence linked to the case. Raghuvanshi’s wife, Sonam, and her associates are at the center of a complex and premeditated crime that unfolded during what was meant to be a honeymoon trip. Authorities are uncovering layers of conspiracy spanning state lines, hidden evidence, and troubling betrayals.

Timeline of the Crime

Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore-based transport businessman, married Sonam on May 11, 2025. The couple embarked on a honeymoon to Meghalaya on May 20. Just three days later, Raja was reported missing. His dismembered body was discovered on June 2 in a deep gorge near a waterfall in the Sohra region of East Khasi Hills.

Investigators now believe the murder was not a spontaneous act of violence but rather a calculated plot involving multiple co-conspirators. Sonam surrendered to authorities in Uttar Pradesh on June 8.

Fresh Arrests and Their Significance

On June 22, the SIT arrested Silome James, a property dealer in Indore, from Bhonrasa toll-gate in Dewas district while he was allegedly attempting to escape to Bhopal. James had leased a flat in Heera Bagh Colony to one of the accused, Vishal Chauhan, and allowed Sonam to stay there upon her return from Meghalaya.

James is accused of helping conceal and destroy key evidence, including jewellery, a laptop, and a firearm believed to belong to Sonam’s boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha. According to police sources, James burned the contents of a box belonging to Sonam at an undisclosed location. Forensic teams have visited the site and recovered partial remains, although the pistol and laptop are still missing.

Hours later, the SIT also apprehended Balla Ahirwar, a security guard stationed at the same property, from his hometown in Ashok Nagar district.

Property Links and Trail of Evidence

The flat at the center of the investigation was rented on May 30 for Rs. 17,000 per month by Vishal Chauhan, who is already implicated in the case. A formal rental agreement was signed, but when police arrived, the flat had been vacated. Sonam is said to have stayed there for several days before turning herself in.

Investigators believe this flat was used to store and later destroy critical evidence, suggesting an elaborate attempt to cover up the crime. The link between the firearm, missing digital devices, and jewellery continues to be a focal point in the ongoing probe.

Legal Proceedings and Next Steps

Both James and Ahirwar will be presented before a local court in Indore for transit remand to transfer them to Shillong, where the case is being investigated. The Meghalaya Police is expected to expand the probe based on their testimonies.

Police sources have hinted at the possibility of additional arrests as the net widens around those who may have aided the escape, sheltering, or destruction of evidence. The involvement of individuals in both Madhya Pradesh and Meghalaya underscores the complex, interstate nature of the crime.

Conclusion: A Chilling Tale of Deception and Premeditation

The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi reveals a deeply unsettling narrative: a newlywed husband lured to his death during his honeymoon, an alleged plot involving multiple actors, and a calculated effort to erase digital and physical traces of the crime. As authorities uncover the extent of the conspiracy, the case continues to captivate and disturb a nation that is closely watching every development.

The investigation is far from over, but one thing is certain—justice will depend on uncovering the full depth of this macabre orchestration.
