Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder: Police Probe Beyond ‘Love Triangle’ in Chilling Contract Killing

By Vinod Pathak , 18 June 2025

The murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya has shocked the nation and prompted a far-reaching investigation. While the initial narrative suggests a love triangle—implicating his wife, her alleged lover, and hired killers—Meghalaya’s police chief has cast doubt on this theory, signaling a deeper web of possible motives. As authorities uncover a disturbing murder plot executed just days after the couple’s wedding, investigators are meticulously gathering evidence, preparing to file a strong chargesheet. This article delves into the chilling timeline, conflicting motives, and broader implications of a case that has gripped India’s attention.

Murder on Honeymoon: A Chilling Crime in the Hills

A newlywed honeymoon turned gruesome homicide in the picturesque hills of Meghalaya has left both investigators and the public reeling. On May 23, 29-year-old Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi was brutally murdered, allegedly at the hands of contract killers hired by his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, and her partner Raj.

The couple had tied the knot on May 11 in Indore and travelled to Meghalaya via Guwahati on May 21. Just two days later, their vacation took a deadly turn. Both were reported missing shortly after checking out of a homestay in Nongriat village, nestled in the East Khasi Hills district.

A Deeper Motive? Police Reject Simplistic Love Triangle Theory

Despite confessions pointing to a love triangle, Meghalaya’s Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang, has publicly questioned the plausibility of this as the sole motive. “Frankly speaking, I still find it difficult to accept the motive that has been given by the accused,” Nongrang told reporters. “It doesn't sit really well.”

Highlighting the implausibility of plotting such a heinous act mere days after marriage, the police chief insisted that multiple angles are being actively explored. “On the surface, it appears to be a love triangle, but personally I wouldn’t believe that it’s the only motive,” she said.

The investigative team is reportedly making rapid progress, tying up loose ends and working toward a watertight chargesheet that will stand firm under legal scrutiny.

Crime Scene Reconstruction and Evidence Collection

Authorities are taking all five arrested individuals—including Sonam, Raj, and three contracted attackers—back to Sohra for a detailed crime scene reconstruction. This step is expected to yield crucial insights into the sequence of events surrounding the murder.

Police say the murder took place in the parking area of Weisawdong Falls. Raja was allegedly struck on the head with a machete in Sonam’s presence, before his body was dumped into a nearby gorge. His decomposed remains were recovered on June 2, more than a week after the incident.

During interrogation, Sonam reportedly disclosed that Raja’s missing jewellery had been stashed in a “particular place.” Authorities are investigating this lead as they continue to recover material evidence.

Fugitive to Surrender: A Cross-Country Escape

After the killing, Sonam fled Meghalaya, evading law enforcement for more than two weeks. Her escape route spanned across Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh before she ultimately surfaced in Ghazipur on June 9, approximately 1,200 kilometers from the crime scene.

That same day, she surrendered to police—just as her boyfriend Raj and the three hired assailants were taken into custody. Investigators believe Sonam’s attempts to cover her tracks were undermined by a critical oversight: she left behind her mangalsutra and a ring in her trolley bag at the homestay in Sohra, raising early suspicions that prompted a wider manhunt.

Legal Proceedings and Broader Implications

The police are expected to file the chargesheet within the mandated timeframe. While the findings so far point to premeditated murder driven by a clandestine relationship, investigators remain open to broader motives that may involve financial, familial, or psychological dimensions.

The case has sparked a national debate about trust, manipulation, and the capacity for violence hidden behind seemingly ordinary lives. It also underscores the importance of thorough, multidisciplinary policing in a country where crimes of passion often mask more intricate schemes.

Conclusion:
As the investigation unfolds, what initially appeared to be a sordid crime of love and betrayal is revealing layers of calculated cruelty and strategic deception. Meghalaya Police’s refusal to accept the love triangle theory at face value suggests there may be more to this case than meets the eye. With the public riveted and the legal stakes high, this haunting murder will likely serve as a case study in how swiftly affection can turn fatal—and how justice must pursue truth beyond the obvious.
