German life sciences giant Bayer AG has announced the launch of BICOTA, an innovative pest management product targeting stem borers, a major threat to rice crops in India. Scheduled for release in June 2025 across 11 key rice-growing states including Punjab, Haryana, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, BICOTA promises longer-lasting protection with a single application while promoting root and tiller development. This launch reflects Bayer’s ongoing commitment to supporting Indian farmers through advanced agricultural solutions designed to increase crop yields, reduce labour costs, and align with sustainable pest management practices.

Bayer’s Strategic Expansion in India’s Rice Sector

Bayer AG is reinforcing its agricultural footprint in India with the introduction of BICOTA, a novel crop protection product designed specifically to combat stem borer infestations in rice. Recognizing the critical importance of rice as a staple food crop for hundreds of millions of Indians, Bayer aims to address the persistent pest challenges that can severely reduce productivity.

The product’s rollout will encompass 11 states renowned for rice cultivation, including agricultural powerhouses such as Punjab, Haryana, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu. The company confirmed that BICOTA will become commercially available starting June 2025, targeting a broad spectrum of farmers across diverse agro-climatic zones.

Innovative Features and Benefits of BICOTA

BICOTA’s granular formulation offers practical advantages for farmers, facilitating easy and efficient field application. Unlike many conventional pest control products, BICOTA delivers extended protection against stem borers with just a single treatment, reducing the frequency and cost of applications.

In addition to pest control, BICOTA promotes healthier root and tiller development, thereby supporting stronger plant growth and potentially boosting overall yields. The product is designed to be compatible with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) frameworks, enabling sustainable farming practices that minimize environmental impact.

Commitment to Sustainability and Farmer Welfare

Mohan Babu, Chief Operating Officer for Bayer India’s Crop Science Division, emphasized the company’s focus on innovation that simplifies the farming process. “With BICOTA, we aim to provide paddy farmers not only with effective pest protection but also with solutions that save time and labour costs, ultimately enhancing their income and livelihood,” he stated.

Bayer also highlighted the product’s safety profile, noting that BICOTA is non-toxic to beneficial insects, an important consideration in maintaining ecological balance within agricultural ecosystems.

The Broader Agricultural Context in India

India’s status as one of the world’s leading rice producers places immense responsibility on companies like Bayer to support crop protection and yield improvement. Stem borers remain a significant threat, exacerbated by shifting climatic conditions that challenge conventional farming methods.

By expanding its portfolio with products like BICOTA, Bayer aligns with its global strategy to strengthen agriculture in emerging markets while addressing critical issues faced by farmers on the ground.

Conclusion

Bayer’s launch of BICOTA represents a strategic advance in pest management technology tailored to India’s rice-growing regions. Combining longer-lasting pest control, crop health benefits, and sustainable practices, the product exemplifies Bayer’s commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity and farmer welfare. As India continues to navigate the complexities of modern farming, such innovations will play a pivotal role in securing food security and rural economic stability.
