President Droupadi Murmu has concluded a landmark diplomatic tour to Portugal and Slovakia—marking the first presidential-level visit to either nation in nearly three decades. This historic mission emphasized expanding bilateral cooperation in emerging sectors such as space, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity, while also reaffirming cultural and economic ties. In Slovakia, President Murmu explored industrial synergies through her visit to Tata Motors’ JLR facility and promoted India’s people-centric diplomacy by engaging with the local Indian diaspora. The visit was marked by symbolic gestures, strategic partnerships, and renewed commitments to shared growth, culminating in the signing of critical memoranda of understanding.

Historic Diplomatic Engagements After Decades

President Murmu’s state visit to Portugal and Slovakia marked a return to high-level diplomacy with these European nations after nearly three decades.

  • The last Indian presidential visit to Slovakia occurred 29 years ago, and it had been 27 years since a similar visit to Portugal.
  • The tour reflects India’s strategic interest in enhancing ties with smaller but pivotal European economies, especially those embracing technological transformation and mutual trade frameworks.

Her engagements showcased not only India’s diplomatic outreach but also its soft power projection through cultural and academic engagements.

Economic Relations and Trade Momentum

During her meeting with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico, economic cooperation emerged as a key theme.

  • Bilateral trade between India and Slovakia has tripled over the past five years, now standing at approximately EUR 1.3 billion (Rs. 11,700 crore).
  • There is investment flowing in both directions, underlining growing confidence and shared commercial interests.
  • Sectors including emerging technologies, education, research, tourism, and health were identified as high-potential areas for future collaboration.

The discussions emphasized diversifying beyond traditional sectors, signaling a pivot towards innovation-led bilateral growth.

Strategic Industry Visit: Tata Motors’ JLR Facility

A high point of the Slovak leg was President Murmu’s visit to Tata Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover plant in Nitra, about 100 kilometers from Bratislava.

  • The plant manufactures Discovery and Defender vehicles, underscoring India’s expanding industrial footprint in Central Europe.
  • Accompanied by President Pellegrini, President Murmu interacted with Indian staff, reinforcing the government’s connect with overseas citizens and commitment to Indian corporate globalisation.

This symbolic visit underlined India’s growing capabilities in automobile manufacturing and advanced engineering exports.

Academic Honors and Cultural Diplomacy

Cultural and academic exchanges played a pivotal role during the visit.

  • President Murmu was awarded an honorary doctorate by Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, affirming India’s intellectual recognition in global academia.
  • In a touching display of soft diplomacy, she planted a Linden tree—Slovakia’s national tree—alongside President Pellegrini. The act echoed India’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, which drew admiration from Slovak leadership.

These activities helped bridge cultural distances, encouraging people-to-people diplomacy at a time when global alliances are increasingly being shaped by civil and academic ties.

Engaging the Indian Diaspora

In a vibrant community interaction, President Murmu met over 250 members of the 6,000-strong Indian diaspora in Slovakia.

  • She urged them to become ambassadors of India in their adopted homeland, emphasizing their role in promoting India’s culture, values, and economic aspirations abroad.
  • This outreach is part of a broader strategy to harness diaspora influence in diplomacy and commerce.

Her address served as a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to its citizens globally, encouraging dual contribution to both home and host nations.

Strategic Agreements and MOUs Signed

Two significant Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during the visit to institutionalize cooperation:

  • An MoU between India’s Sushma Swaraj Foreign Service Institute and Slovakia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aimed at bolstering diplomatic training and exchange.
  • Another MoU between NSIDC (National Small Industries Development Corporation) and Business Slovakia, focused on strengthening small and medium enterprise ecosystems through shared knowledge and business facilitation.

These agreements are expected to pave the way for structured, long-term collaboration, especially in entrepreneurship and foreign policy education.

Conclusion: Recalibrating Diplomacy with Purpose and Precision

President Murmu’s state visit to Portugal and Slovakia has reinvigorated India’s diplomatic engagement in Europe, shifting attention to non-traditional allies with high potential for collaboration in innovation, education, and industry. From exploring automotive synergies at Tata’s European plant to institutionalizing SME partnerships, the visit went beyond symbolism to deliver tangible outcomes. By linking historical goodwill with modern cooperation strategies, India is sending a clear message: it seeks mutually beneficial alliances grounded in technology, shared values, and sustainable growth. The tour serves as a timely reminder that diplomacy in the 21st century must be inclusive, dynamic, and forward-looking.
