In a significant move to bolster regional energy security and promote sustainable development, the Adani Group has entered into a partnership with Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) of Bhutan to jointly develop hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 5,000 MW. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims to tap into Bhutan’s abundant hydropower potential, enhancing cross-border collaboration and facilitating the export of green energy to India. This initiative builds on an ongoing partnership for the Wangchhu Hydropower Project and will unfold in phases, including additional hydropower and pumped storage projects.

Adani Group Expands Renewable Energy Footprint with Bhutan Partnership

The Adani Group has signed a landmark agreement with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to develop an ambitious 5,000 MW portfolio of hydropower projects in Bhutan. The deal, formalized in Thimphu, underscores Adani’s commitment to scaling up its renewable energy efforts and securing cleaner energy sources for the region. This partnership is expected to not only enhance energy security but also contribute significantly to Bhutan’s renewable energy capacity, with a clear focus on environmental sustainability.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed by DGPC’s Managing Director, Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, and Naresh Telgu, the Chief Operating Officer of Adani Green Hydro Ltd, marks a pivotal expansion of Adani Group’s renewable energy ambitions. The partnership will support a mix of hydropower and pumped storage projects, which will be developed in phases and identified through detailed project reports.

Strengthening Bhutan’s Hydropower Potential

This collaboration between Adani Group and DGPC builds on an existing joint venture for the Wangchhu Hydropower Project, in which DGPC holds a majority stake of 51%, with Adani owning 49%. The strategic partnership seeks to enhance Bhutan’s hydropower resources, known for their vast potential, and to create long-term value for both nations. The development of this 5,000 MW hydropower capacity will not only support the energy needs of India but also bolster Bhutan’s economy through the export of clean energy.

Naresh Telgu, COO of Adani Green Hydro, expressed the significance of the project, stating that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to developing infrastructure that not only powers the region sustainably but also strengthens the bonds of regional cooperation. This joint effort will make Bhutan a key player in the renewable energy space, while also providing India with a steady source of green electricity.

Bhutan and India: A Model of Cross-Border Collaboration

The hydropower partnership also emphasizes the enduring and friendly relationship between Bhutan and India, which has long been strengthened by mutual cooperation in the energy sector. Dasho Chhewang Rinzin of DGPC highlighted that the collaboration with Adani will further solidify Bhutan’s strategic relationship with India and enhance both countries’ energy security. Bhutan’s hydropower resources are widely regarded as a cornerstone of the exemplary diplomatic ties shared between the two nations.

Bhutan has become a critical supplier of clean energy to India, with its renewable resources playing a vital role in India’s energy transition. The planned 5,000 MW initiative will significantly expand Bhutan’s energy exports to India, supporting India’s green energy targets and enhancing the broader regional power grid.

Adani Group’s Growing Renewable Energy Portfolio

This hydropower initiative is part of Adani Group’s broader strategy to expand its footprint in the renewable energy sector. Headquartered in Ahmedabad, Adani Group has diversified interests, including logistics, power generation, infrastructure, and consumer finance. With a significant focus on renewable energy, the company is aggressively scaling its operations in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, positioning itself as a global leader in sustainable energy.

The group’s expertise in developing large-scale infrastructure projects, combined with its deep commitment to sustainability, has allowed it to become one of the largest players in the Indian renewable energy market. Through partnerships like the one with DGPC, Adani is positioning itself as a key enabler of India’s green energy transition and regional energy cooperation.

Looking Ahead: Regional Impact and Sustainability Goals

The 5,000 MW hydropower initiative is a game-changer for both Adani Group and Bhutan. As the project moves forward, it will create new opportunities for cross-border trade, renewable energy development, and economic growth. The partnership underscores a shared vision for sustainable development, with a focus on clean, renewable energy that addresses the region’s growing energy needs while minimizing environmental impact.

The collaboration is poised to serve as a model for future cross-border renewable energy ventures, demonstrating the power of international cooperation in achieving shared sustainability goals. For Adani Group, this agreement solidifies its position as a major player in the global renewable energy landscape, while for Bhutan, it opens up new avenues for economic development and strengthens its energy export capacity.

Conclusion: A Landmark Step in Sustainable Energy Development

The Adani Group’s collaboration with Bhutan’s DGPC represents a landmark step toward achieving regional energy security and promoting sustainability through the development of large-scale hydropower projects. With 5,000 MW of new capacity in the pipeline, this partnership is poised to transform Bhutan into a key supplier of green energy, contributing to both nations’ energy goals and enhancing their diplomatic ties. The initiative reflects a forward-thinking approach to energy infrastructure, positioning both Bhutan and Adani Group as leaders in the global push for clean, renewable energy.
