EY India Calls for Culturally Rooted AI to Unlock the Next Phase of Digital Growth

By Geeta Maurya , 27 January 2026

India’s artificial intelligence journey must move beyond imported models and generic frameworks to embrace systems deeply aligned with the country’s linguistic, cultural, and social realities, according to a recent EY India analysis. The report argues that culturally rooted AI—designed for India’s diversity, scale, and unique user behavior—will be critical to driving inclusive growth and widespread adoption. From vernacular language processing to context-aware automation, such systems could significantly enhance productivity across sectors. EY India emphasizes that local relevance, ethical design, and regulatory clarity will determine whether AI becomes a transformative force or a missed opportunity in India’s digital economy.

Rethinking AI Through an Indian Lens

EY India’s analysis underscores the limitations of deploying globally developed AI models without adequate localization. India’s diversity—spanning languages, customs, economic conditions, and digital literacy levels—requires AI systems that can interpret context with greater nuance.

According to the report, algorithms trained predominantly on Western datasets often struggle to accurately reflect Indian user behavior, leading to biases, inefficiencies, and lower adoption rates. Culturally grounded AI, by contrast, can deliver more accurate outcomes and foster trust among users.

Language and Accessibility at the Core

A central pillar of culturally rooted AI is linguistic inclusivity. With the majority of India’s population preferring regional languages, EY India highlights the importance of advanced natural language processing models tailored to Indian languages and dialects.

Voice-based interfaces, localized chatbots, and multilingual AI tools could dramatically expand digital access, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. Such capabilities are seen as essential for scaling AI-driven services in sectors such as banking, healthcare, education, and public service delivery.

Sectoral Impact and Economic Potential

EY India projects that context-aware AI solutions could unlock significant productivity gains across industries. In agriculture, localized AI models can offer region-specific insights on weather, soil, and crop patterns. In financial services, culturally informed credit assessment tools could improve risk evaluation for underserved segments.

The report also notes that small and medium enterprises stand to benefit disproportionately, as affordable, localized AI tools lower barriers to digital transformation and competitiveness.

Governance, Ethics, and Data Stewardship

While advocating for localized innovation, EY India stresses the need for robust governance frameworks. The development of culturally rooted AI must be accompanied by clear standards on data privacy, algorithmic transparency, and ethical deployment.

India’s evolving regulatory environment presents an opportunity to craft policies that balance innovation with accountability. Public-private collaboration will be critical to ensuring that AI systems reflect societal values while remaining globally competitive.

Building for Scale and Sustainability

EY India concludes that India’s AI ambitions will be realized not by replicating global models, but by building systems designed for local complexity and scale. Investments in indigenous datasets, talent development, and computational infrastructure are seen as foundational to this effort.

As AI adoption accelerates, culturally rooted design could become India’s competitive advantage—enabling technology that is not only powerful, but also intuitive, inclusive, and trusted by millions.
