The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the rollout of QR code-enabled signboards across national highways, a move designed to boost transparency, road safety, and commuter convenience. By scanning these QR codes, travelers will access comprehensive details such as project specifications, emergency contacts, highway facilities, and helpline numbers. Signboards will be placed at toll plazas, rest areas, and truck lay-bys for maximum visibility. This initiative, aligned with India’s broader digital infrastructure agenda, also coincides with NHAI’s ambitious asset monetization plans aimed at raising Rs. 35,000–40,000 crore in FY26.
Digital Transformation on Highways
NHAI’s decision to embed QR codes on vertical signboards represents a major stride in digitizing road infrastructure. Positioned at toll gates, rest points, and junctions, these codes will provide commuters with instant access to project-specific data. Information such as the highway chainage, construction timelines, segment length, and contact details of project officials—including engineers, toll managers, and field officers—will now be available at a single scan.

Citizens will be able to track construction deadlines, monitor project status, and identify the responsible authorities. This not only empowers road users but also places a check on project execution and operational efficiency.

In addition to project details, the QR code system will connect commuters with critical amenities. Scanning will reveal the nearest hospitals, fuel stations, vehicle repair shops, eateries, restrooms, and charging points for electric vehicles. Such information is expected to significantly improve the travel experience, particularly on long-haul routes frequented by truck drivers and intercity commuters.

Financing Growth through Asset Monetization
Parallel to this digital upgrade, NHAI is advancing its financial strategy. For FY26, the authority has set a target of raising between Rs. 35,000 crore and Rs. 40,000 crore through asset monetization. Methods under consideration include toll-operate-transfer (TOT) models and infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs), both of which are increasingly seen as reliable instruments to recycle capital into new projects.
