Modi’s G7 Visit to Canada Signals Diplomatic Reset Amid Global Geopolitical Tensions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada—his first visit to the country in nearly a decade—marking a pivotal moment for India-Canada relations. Invited by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Modi’s presence underscores New Delhi’s renewed engagement with key global powers, especially amid complex geopolitical dynamics. The summit, focused on global security, technology, and energy cooperation, also serves as a platform for bilateral talks following months of strained ties between India and Canada. This will be Modi’s sixth consecutive G7 appearance and his eleventh since India began participating in Outreach sessions.

Diplomatic Icebreaker: Modi Returns to Canada Amid Tense Backdrop

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Kananaskis, Canada, for the G7 Summit marks a significant diplomatic moment. It is his first visit to the country in nearly 10 years and comes at the invitation of newly appointed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The two-day summit on June 16–17 is expected to foster renewed dialogue between India and Canada following a period of heightened bilateral tensions.

This is Modi’s sixth consecutive attendance at the G7 Summit, signaling India’s consistent engagement with major global economies. The outreach, however, goes beyond symbolism. It represents a strategic effort to restore diplomatic trust between New Delhi and Ottawa, which had frayed dramatically in 2023.

Repairing a Fractured Relationship

India-Canada relations reached a nadir last year after allegations emerged linking Indian officials to the assassination of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. India categorically denied involvement, and both countries expelled several diplomats in a tit-for-tat escalation.

Carney’s decision to invite Modi so early in his premiership, after replacing Justin Trudeau in March, is widely seen as a deliberate move to rebuild the bilateral bridge. India, too, responded optimistically, stating its intent to pursue ties based on "mutual trust and sensitivity."

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, security-level dialogue between the two countries has resumed, and both sides are considering appointing new high commissioners, signaling the resumption of normal diplomatic channels.

Strategic Bilateral Talks on the Sidelines

On the sidelines of the G7 Summit, Modi is expected to engage in bilateral meetings with Carney and other world leaders. The Indian government views this opportunity as a critical juncture to "explore pathways" for revitalizing ties with Canada.

India and Canada share a strategic partnership that was formally announced during Modi’s last Canadian visit in 2015. Since then, cooperation has spanned areas such as energy, education, innovation, and trade.

In 2024, bilateral trade in goods stood at USD 8.6 billion, with India exporting USD 4.2 billion and importing USD 4.4 billion. Trade in services was more robust at USD 14.3 billion, though heavily skewed in Canada’s favor, with India exporting USD 2.5 billion and importing USD 11.8 billion in services.

G7 Summit: A Platform for Global Engagement

India's presence at the G7 Summit reinforces its rising clout in global affairs. As the world’s fifth-largest economy, India has been a recurring invitee to the Outreach sessions of the summit. The 2025 gathering will be India’s eleventh appearance at the G7, having previously participated in sessions hosted by France, the UK, Germany, Russia, Japan, and Italy.

The Kananaskis summit, chaired by Canada in its role as this year’s rotating G7 president, will mark the group’s 50th anniversary. It is expected to address major global concerns, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, heightened tensions in the Middle East, and growing international scrutiny of AI, energy security, and quantum innovation.

Modi is expected to speak on these issues during the Outreach segment, especially around the intersection of artificial intelligence and energy—a topic India has increasingly prioritized in international forums.

Global Leaders in Focus

U.S. President Donald Trump, who arrived in Canada a day before the summit, is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Carney as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. These meetings reflect the diverse and volatile geopolitical themes the summit must confront.

For India, the event also follows the recent Operation Sindoor—a targeted strike on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam attacks in April—adding another layer of context to Modi’s diplomatic agenda.

Conclusion: A Calculated Re-entry into Canadian Diplomacy

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Canada, under the diplomatic canopy of the G7 Summit, represents far more than symbolic participation. It is a calculated move to revive a crucial partnership that had languished in diplomatic limbo. With high-stakes bilateral conversations and critical global discussions on the horizon, the summit offers India not only a voice at the world’s most exclusive economic forum, but also a chance to chart a new course in its evolving relationship with Canada.

As the G7 convenes in the scenic but symbolically charged backdrop of Kananaskis, all eyes will be on how two of the world's prominent democracies steer their engagement amid turbulent global tides.
