KL Rahul, Shubman Gill Shine in Intra-Squad Clash as India Gears Up for England Test Series

By Nimrat , 15 June 2025

KL Rahul and newly-appointed captain Shubman Gill struck confident half-centuries during India’s intra-squad warm-up match in Beckenham, offering promising signs ahead of the much-anticipated five-match Test series against England beginning June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. With several key veterans retired, the upcoming series signals a generational shift, placing added weight on the shoulders of emerging leaders. The warm-up, conducted behind closed doors, gave selectors and team management one final opportunity to assess form and fitness. All-rounder Shardul Thakur also made his presence felt with key breakthroughs, intensifying competition for a place in India’s revamped playing XI.

India’s Final Tune-Up Before England Tour

The Indian Test squad took part in a four-day intra-squad match at Beckenham, their last full match practice before facing England in the first Test. Notably, the fixture was held without media or broadcast coverage, emphasizing focus and internal preparation. Updates trickled in only via BCCI's official social media channels, offering glimpses of standout performances.

KL Rahul, who has been in sublime touch since arriving in England, continued his strong run by scoring a composed fifty. His earlier scores of 116 and 51 for India A against the England Lions already positioned him as a likely contender for a middle-order role. His fitness and rhythm will be pivotal, especially with India seeking stability in the post-Kohli batting era.

Shubman Gill’s Statement of Intent as Test Captain

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepping away from Test duties, Shubman Gill inherits the captaincy at a critical juncture. Despite his modest record in English conditions — an average of just 14.66 across three Tests — Gill’s half-century in the warm-up offers a timely boost. It’s a personal milestone that also strengthens his leadership credentials as India prepares to take on England on their home turf.

Gill’s composure and technical adjustments were evident, hinting at a more measured approach in his new role. His success as a leader will be scrutinized closely throughout the series, which spans from June to August and includes Tests at iconic venues such as Edgbaston, Lord’s, The Oval, and Old Trafford.

Shardul Thakur and the All-Rounder Conundrum

In the contest for the pace-bowling all-rounder slot, Shardul Thakur made a strong case with his performance in Beckenham. Backed by earlier contributions of 27, 19, and 34 with the bat and a two-wicket haul against England Lions, Thakur has kept pressure on rising prospect Nitish Kumar Reddy. Reddy, while promising, faces a steep challenge in dislodging the more experienced Thakur ahead of a tough overseas campaign.

Prasidh Krishna, one of India’s pace options, emphasized the importance of these preparatory games: “Some players have come straight from the 'A' matches, and this game time is essential,” he said. Krishna praised both bowlers and batsmen for showing competitiveness, noting that conditions offered something for everyone.

Team Chemistry and Transitioning Era

Prasidh also spoke about the team’s camaraderie: “Everyone’s excited. We’ve all played a lot of cricket with different teams over the past few months. Now, we’re coming together with a clear mission. The environment is light, and the energy is high.”

The sentiment captures the essence of a new phase in Indian Test cricket. The retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin have left leadership and performance voids. However, they also present opportunities for younger talent to assert themselves and create a new legacy. The squad, a balanced mix of youth and experience, reflects this transitional moment.

India’s Full Squad for the England Series

India’s 18-member squad for the England Tests includes:

  • Captain: Shubman Gill
  • Vice-Captain: Rishabh Pant
  • Batters: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair
  • All-Rounders: Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur
  • Wicketkeeper-Batters: Dhruv Jurel
  • Pacers: Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh
  • Spinners: Kuldeep Yadav

With several promising players such as Sudharsan, Easwaran, and Reddy in the mix, the series could also serve as a proving ground for the next generation of Indian Test stars.

Looking Ahead: New Faces, Historic Grounds, and Fresh Aspirations

The first Test begins at Headingley on June 20 and sets the stage for one of India’s most anticipated overseas campaigns in recent memory. The team not only battles a formidable English side but also its own recent history, aiming to win a series in England for the first time since 2007.

In this backdrop, Rahul’s reassuring touch, Gill’s leadership spark, and Thakur’s all-round grit offer signs of hope. Whether this new-look Indian side can seize the moment remains to be seen, but their journey begins with the kind of preparation and purpose that promises compelling cricket in the months ahead.
