KL Rahul Embraces Leadership Role as India Begins New Era Without Kohli and Rohit in England Test Series

By Amrita Bhatia , 21 June 2025

As India prepares for its Test series in England, KL Rahul finds himself navigating uncharted territory—entering a dressing room devoid of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the first time in his international career. With both veterans opting out, Rahul acknowledges the emotional and professional void their absence leaves. Now one of the senior-most players, he must anchor a younger squad against a formidable England side on its home turf. Rahul, coming off an impressive IPL season, is focused on delivering match-defining performances, drawing from past success on English soil while stepping into a leadership mantle.

A New Phase for Indian Cricket

For the first time since 2011, India’s Test playing XI will take the field without either Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. Their absence signals a transitional phase in Indian cricket, and no one feels this shift more deeply than KL Rahul. Having debuted under MS Dhoni and matured as a Test batter under Kohli’s captaincy, Rahul admits it feels “strange” to enter a dressing room without the two legends. However, he respects their decision and emphasizes that it is now up to players like him to guide the team forward.

Rahul’s Burgeoning Responsibility

Rahul, 33, recognizes that with seniority comes responsibility. Having played over 50 Tests, he is aware that younger teammates will look to him for stability and composure, especially in challenging conditions like those in England. Reflecting on Kohli and Rohit’s impact, Rahul described them as “pillars of Indian cricket” and acknowledged their immense contributions over the past decade. Now, as they take a step back, Rahul is determined to rise to the occasion.

England: A Crucible of Challenge

This marks Rahul’s third Test tour of England, a country that has seen him produce some of his most memorable performances. His century at The Oval in 2018, though ending in defeat, showcased his skill against the swinging ball. Three years later, he earned a coveted spot on the Lord’s honours board, helping India to a 151-run victory. Rahul knows replicating and surpassing those feats will be critical as India fields a younger, relatively inexperienced side against a strong England outfit.

Focused Preparation and High Stakes

Rahul's preparation for the England Tests began immediately after his successful IPL 2025 campaign, where he tallied 529 runs, including a century and three half-centuries. Conscious of the unique demands of English conditions, he has worked closely with his coach to fine-tune his technique. Rahul admits that playing England at home is “always a challenge,” but he remains optimistic about the team's prospects and committed to leading by example.
