Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren recently laid the foundation stone for a Rs. 80 crore milk powder plant in Ranchi, reinforcing the state’s commitment to strengthening its dairy and animal husbandry sectors. Set to be built within the Medha Dairy Plant campus at Hotwar, the facility will have a daily capacity of 20 tonnes. Addressing farmers at the ceremony, Soren emphasized the importance of value addition in agriculture, highlighting ongoing efforts to support farmers and promote sustainable, self-reliant agricultural practices. The new initiative aims to empower local producers and help Jharkhand become an exporter of dairy products within the next few years.

Strategic Investment in Dairy Infrastructure

In a significant move to bolster the dairy industry, the Jharkhand government has launched a Rs. 80 crore milk powder plant in the capital city of Ranchi. This facility, located at the Medha Dairy Plant campus in Hotwar, is part of the state’s broader vision to strengthen animal husbandry and rural livelihoods. With an expected processing capacity of 20 tonnes of milk powder daily, the plant will enhance the value chain in dairy products and support farmers by ensuring a fair market for their produce.

Empowering Farmers Through Value Addition

Chief Minister Hemant Soren underscored the urgent need for commercialising agricultural and dairy produce. Addressing farmers at the event, he stressed that despite rising inflation, farmers’ incomes must not stagnate. “We stand with you,” he said, highlighting various government initiatives aimed at uplifting farming and animal husbandry. By setting up the milk powder plant, the state aims to add value to milk production, ensuring better returns for farmers and expanding market opportunities.

Agriculture and Animal Husbandry: A Cornerstone of Growth

Soren reiterated that agriculture and animal husbandry are not only crucial for rural livelihoods but also integral to the broader economy. He recalled how the slogan Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan once encapsulated the role of farmers, stressing that the sector remains vital despite changing times. Unlike industries that can have environmental impacts, he pointed out, farming and dairying sustain livelihoods without harming the ecosystem.

Towards Self-Reliance and Export Ambitions

The chief minister expressed optimism that Jharkhand would become self-reliant in the production of milk, fish, and meat within the next five to seven years, paving the way for future exports. To achieve this, the government is implementing an action plan to boost milk collection, offering fair pricing and market access to dairy farmers. Additionally, incentives are being provided to further stimulate milk production, ensuring sustainable income for those engaged in dairying and animal husbandry.

A Vision for Sustainable Agriculture

Beyond the establishment of the milk powder plant, the event reflected a larger policy focus on empowering farmers through modern, sustainable practices. Soren cited the example of cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s foray into farming as a symbol of agricultural potential and innovation. By investing in infrastructure and value addition, the government aims to transform the dairy sector into a cornerstone of Jharkhand’s economic growth, while prioritizing ecological balance and rural prosperity.

This investment is more than just a plant—it is a step towards making Jharkhand a hub for sustainable agricultural and dairy development, with far-reaching implications for the livelihoods of its farmers and the state’s economic future.
