Inside Hermès Horizons: The Hidden Atelier Where Imagination Meets Mastery

By Kirti Srinivasan , 31 May 2025

Hermès, long synonymous with timeless luxury and artisanal rigor, takes personalization to another level through Ateliers Horizons—a little-known, highly exclusive workshop tucked away in the Paris suburb of Pantin. Far from the glimmer of flagship boutiques, this atelier crafts bespoke marvels ranging from leather-clad jukeboxes to yachts and jet interiors. Under the creative direction of Axel de Beaufort, a naval architect by training, the studio balances technical precision with unbridled imagination. More than a destination for outlandish commissions, Horizons is a living embodiment of Hermès’ heritage—where craftsmanship, creativity, and curiosity converge to shape the future of luxury.

A Quiet Powerhouse in Pantin

Behind a discreet steel gate in Pantin, just beyond the bustle of Paris, lies a workshop that quietly redefines what bespoke luxury can be. Ateliers Horizons, a division of Hermès devoted to audacious and highly personalized design, is where fantasy meets function. Here, one doesn’t simply request a handbag—they dream of birdcages, pineapples, or even disco balls rendered in leather, wood, and ingenuity.

Unlike the traditional Hermès ateliers known for Birkins and Kellys, Horizons does not cater to the brand’s already-lengthy waiting lists. It exists in a parallel realm of imagination—where creativity trumps convention and craftsmanship knows no boundaries.

The Visionary at the Helm

Leading the atelier since 2012 is Axel de Beaufort, an architect and naval designer whose pedigree includes training at the University of Southampton in England. De Beaufort’s background in marine and industrial design gives him a singular perspective on structural integrity and aesthetics—an ideal combination for reimagining surfboards, boxing gloves, or private jet interiors under the Hermès banner.

Whether admiring the rare 1935 C28 Aérosport Voisin automobile housed in the showroom or working alongside artisans on avant-garde commissions, de Beaufort embodies the atelier’s ethos: never settle for the ordinary when the extraordinary is possible.

From Foosball Tables to Flying Machines

Among the most unusual projects handled by Horizons are a handcrafted canoe, a fully leather-wrapped foosball table, and custom aircraft seating. These objects often start as sketches but evolve into collaborative works of art, shaped by a multidisciplinary team of about 50 designers, engineers, and artisans.

One of the atelier’s showpieces—the silver Voisin car—features interiors meticulously reimagined by Hermès in partnership with professional restorers. The attention to detail is not simply aesthetic; it’s technical, rooted in function, material science, and traditional French craftsmanship.

Bespoke Culture Meets Capsule Innovation

While client commissions remain the heart of Horizons, the atelier has recently expanded into conceptual capsule collections available in select Hermès boutiques. Originally prompted by creative briefs from store managers, these limited-edition items have included kites, hammocks, and picnic hampers. Now self-driven, the atelier conceives seasonal pieces like surfboards, skateboards, and high-fidelity speakers—each carrying the hallmark Hermès blend of elegance and eccentricity.

These collections are not mass-produced novelties but rather thematic expressions of Horizons’ creative DNA—where experimentation meets the highest standards of luxury production.

Craftsmanship in Motion

Inside the workshop, the soundscape is rhythmic: hammering, stitching, and the quiet hum of focused creativity. Artisans work in tandem, their tools an extension of their hands. One crafts a leather handle for a foosball table, another adjusts the angle of a hand-sewn aircraft seat.

This is not just a studio; it’s a sanctuary for creative engineering. It reflects Hermès’ unique ability to integrate the industrial with the artisanal, ensuring that each piece—no matter how eccentric—embodies timeless quality and design integrity.

The Future of Luxury, Tailored

Ateliers Horizons is not merely a workshop—it’s Hermès' living laboratory for the future of luxury. In an industry often governed by formula and repetition, this atelier dares to explore. With every custom piece, it reinforces the notion that true luxury lies in the personal, the playful, and the patiently handcrafted.

For clients who want more than prestige—for those who seek a narrative sewn into the seams of their belongings—Horizons offers something no waiting list ever could: a creation that’s entirely, unmistakably their own.
