During a recent visit to The Hague, India’s Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal discussed enhancing bilateral trade and investment with Dutch officials. Despite global economic challenges, India's exports to the Netherlands steadily increased, rising by 1.75% in 2024-25. The talks focused on strengthening collaborations through the Joint Trade and Investment Committee (JTIC) and exploring new avenues for strategic economic cooperation, including entrepreneurship, technology exchange, and space cooperation. Barthwal also extended his trip to Zagreb, Croatia, to explore further trade and investment opportunities.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties with the Netherlands

India and the Netherlands have been actively working to bolster their trade and investment relations, with recent discussions highlighting the growing potential between the two nations. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal’s visit to The Hague marks a significant step in enhancing bilateral economic ties. The meeting, attended by Dutch officials including Ambassador Kees van Rij and Michiel Sweers, Director-General for Foreign Economic Relations, focused on expanding collaborations through the Joint Trade and Investment Committee (JTIC) and further developing strategic partnerships.

Despite global economic uncertainties, India’s export performance to the Netherlands has remained robust. In 2024-25, India's exports to the Netherlands rose by 1.75%, reaching USD 22.76 billion, up from USD 22.36 billion in the previous year. Imports during the same period stood at more than USD 5 billion, reflecting the mutually beneficial trade relationship between the two countries.

Focus on Innovation and Technology

One of the key aspects of the visit was a deeper focus on expanding cooperation in the fields of innovation, technology exchange, and entrepreneurship. Commerce Ministry’s Joint Secretary Saket Kumar participated in meetings with senior Dutch officials to discuss the startup ecosystem and explore avenues for collaboration in technology and space sectors.

The Netherlands has long been recognized for its strong innovation-driven economy, and this alignment with India's growing tech and entrepreneurial landscape presents vast opportunities for both nations. The discussions emphasized the importance of scaling startup partnerships and fostering a more robust entrepreneurial ecosystem, aiming to create synergies that will drive sustainable economic growth.

Exploring Croatia as an Emerging Trade Partner

In addition to his visit to the Netherlands, Commerce Secretary Barthwal also traveled to Zagreb, Croatia, where he met with Zdenko Lucic, State-Secretary for Foreign Trade and Development. The meeting was part of India’s ongoing efforts to diversify its trade partnerships in Europe. With exports to Croatia standing at USD 270 million for the 2024-25 fiscal year (April-January), there is significant potential to increase trade, particularly in sectors such as technology, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture.

Imports from Croatia during this period were valued at USD 69.49 million, highlighting the opportunity for further collaboration and investment in both directions. Croatia’s strategic location within the European Union makes it an attractive partner for India as it seeks to expand its presence in the European market.

Economic Landscape and Future Prospects

The steady rise in India’s exports to both the Netherlands and Croatia reflects the country’s resilience in navigating the challenges posed by global economic volatility. With a growing demand for Indian goods and services in European markets, the Indian government’s efforts to expand trade agreements and strategic partnerships are paying off.

Looking ahead, India is focused on leveraging its strong ties with European nations like the Netherlands and Croatia to build more diverse and sustainable trade relationships. The emphasis on innovation, technology, and collaboration in emerging industries like space and digital services positions India as an attractive destination for European investment, while also providing new growth opportunities for Indian companies looking to expand into Europe.

Conclusion

India’s ongoing diplomatic engagements with the Netherlands and Croatia underscore the country’s proactive approach to strengthening its trade ties and enhancing economic cooperation in Europe. With exports to the Netherlands showing consistent growth and the exploration of new opportunities in Croatia, India is positioning itself as a key player in Europe’s trade ecosystem. Through initiatives such as the Joint Trade and Investment Committee and a focus on innovation-driven collaborations, both nations are set to benefit from expanded partnerships, setting the stage for long-term economic growth and strategic cooperation.
