In a bold bid to reshape mobile connectivity in underserved regions, Vodafone Idea has partnered with U.S.-based satellite telecom innovator AST SpaceMobile to deliver cellular broadband directly to smartphones via space-based technology. The alliance aims to create a hybrid connectivity ecosystem that merges terrestrial and satellite networks without the need for specialized devices. Backed by strategic investments from global telecom giants and tech firms like Google and Verizon, AST’s technology promises to connect unserved populations, even in India’s remotest corners.

Twid, a fintech innovator in the rewards-based payment ecosystem, has set an ambitious target to double its merchant partner network to 2 lakh by the close of FY25. The company, which recently surpassed the 1 lakh merchant milestone, collaborates with high-profile brands including Swiggy, Myntra, and MakeMyTrip. By converting reward points into a seamless, spendable currency, Twid is revolutionizing traditional loyalty programs.

Vodafone Idea’s stock plummeted nearly 9 percent following the Supreme Court’s dismissal of its plea for waiver of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues, a ruling that underscored judicial resolve in upholding regulatory frameworks. The firm’s market capitalization shrank by nearly Rs. 7,000 crore in a single trading session, reflecting investor concern over the financial implications. The court labeled the telecom companies’ petitions as "misconceived," reiterating that government interventions remain beyond judicial obstruction.

Vodafone Idea (VIL) has expanded its 5G network to Chandigarh and Patna, with plans to bring 5G services to Delhi and Bengaluru by May 2025. This follows a successful 5G launch in Mumbai, where the service has already gained significant traction. With over 70% of eligible users enjoying the new service, VIL is enhancing its market position by offering unlimited 5G data on select plans. The company aims to capture the growing demand for high-speed connectivity, including applications such as streaming, gaming, and cloud services.

Nokia Solutions and Networks India recently sold nearly 1% of its stake in Vodafone Idea for Rs 786 crore through an open market transaction. The sale of 102.7 crore shares at Rs 7.65 each aligns with Vodafone Idea's ongoing debt restructuring efforts, which also involve share allocations to vendors like Nokia and Ericsson. While Goldman Sachs acquired a substantial portion of the shares, Vodafone Idea’s stock price saw a notable drop, reflecting investor sentiment amid the company's financial challenges.

India's telecom sector has witnessed robust growth in the December quarter, with gross revenues soaring 14.07% year-on-year to Rs. 96,390 crore, according to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai). The sector's adjusted gross revenue (AGR) also grew by 14.89%, reaching Rs. 77,934 crore. Leading the charge, Reliance Jio recorded the highest AGR at Rs. 28,542 crore, while Bharti Airtel reported impressive growth of 27.31% in AGR. Despite challenges, Vodafone Idea and BSNL also posted positive figures.

In a significant move to bolster its 4G and 5G services, telecom giant Vodafone Idea (Vi) has entered into a strategic partnership with Cisco, aimed at enhancing its network infrastructure. This collaboration, part of Vi’s broader Rs 30,000 crore investment plan in network expansion, will see the deployment of Cisco’s Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based transport network. Although the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, this partnership signifies a key step in Vodafone Idea’s efforts to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving telecommunications market.
