Telangana Enhances Kidney Care Infrastructure Amid Growing Demand

By Kunal Shrivastav , 29 October 2025

Telangana is ramping up its kidney care infrastructure in response to rising cases of renal diseases. The state government has announced the establishment of 18 new dialysis centers and seven vascular centers, strategically located to ensure dialysis facilities are accessible every 20–25 kilometers. This initiative complements ongoing efforts under the Jeevandan program, which has facilitated hundreds of kidney transplants annually. With a focus on improving patient access, reducing treatment costs, and enhancing the quality of care, Telangana is positioning itself to meet the growing demand for renal healthcare while promoting organ donation awareness and preventive kidney health.

Expansion of Dialysis and Vascular Centers

The Telangana government has initiated the establishment of 18 dialysis centers and seven vascular centers across key districts, including Khammam, Warangal, Mahabubnagar, and Adilabad. These centers are designed to serve both urban and rural populations, with the addition of 74 dialysis machines to existing facilities. The expansion aims to reduce patient travel burdens and provide timely access to life-saving treatment, addressing the increasing prevalence of chronic kidney disease in the state.

Improving Accessibility and Coverage

Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha emphasized that dialysis facilities should be available every 20–25 kilometers to ensure comprehensive coverage. Currently, Telangana operates 102 government-run dialysis centers, serving approximately 7,550 patients. The ongoing expansion is expected to significantly increase capacity, ensuring equitable access and supporting early intervention for kidney disease patients.

Kidney Transplantation Services

Kidney transplantation remains a critical component of renal care in Telangana. In Hyderabad, the procedure costs between ₹4.5 lakh and ₹6 lakh, encompassing pre-operative assessments, surgery, hospitalization, and post-operative care. The Jeevandan program has played a pivotal role in promoting organ donation, facilitating approximately 500 living donor and 250–300 deceased donor transplants annually. This initiative continues to raise awareness, streamline transplantation procedures, and support patients financially.

Addressing Challenges and Ensuring Quality

Despite the expansion, challenges persist in maintaining high-quality care. Ensuring adequate trained personnel, regular maintenance of dialysis equipment, and financial support for patients remain priorities. The state is also focusing on preventive measures, public awareness campaigns, and integrating kidney health into broader healthcare strategies to reduce disease incidence and enhance outcomes.
