SBI Mutual Fund, India's largest asset management company, has launched its inaugural Specialised Investment Fund (SIF), the Magnum Hybrid Long Short Fund. Opening for subscription from October 1 to October 15, 2025, this interval fund aims to offer investors a balanced approach by combining equity, debt, and derivatives within a tax-efficient structure. Targeted at high-net-worth individuals (HNIs), the fund seeks to provide consistent returns with reduced volatility, leveraging both long and short positions across various asset classes.

Introduction to SBI's Magnum Hybrid Long Short Fund

SBI Mutual Fund has introduced the Magnum Hybrid Long Short Fund as its first offering under the newly established SIF framework by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). This initiative reflects SBI's commitment to diversifying its product portfolio and catering to the evolving needs of sophisticated investors. The fund is designed to navigate market cycles effectively by integrating equity, debt, and derivatives, aiming to deliver stable returns with lower risk.

Fund Structure and Strategy

The Magnum Hybrid Long Short Fund adopts a multi-asset strategy:

  • Equity Allocation: 65% to 75% in equities, primarily among the top 200 companies, with a focus on those exhibiting strong fundamentals and liquidity.
  • Debt Instruments: 25% to 35% in debt securities, providing stability and income generation.
  • Alternative Assets: Up to 10% in Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs), offering diversification.

The fund employs derivative strategies, including covered calls and arbitrage, to hedge equity exposure and manage risk. Additionally, it may take unhedged short positions up to 25% to capitalize on market opportunities.

Investment Details and Accessibility

  • Minimum Investment: ₹10 lakh for the initial subscription, with subsequent investments starting from ₹10,000.
  • Subscription Period: October 1 to October 15, 2025.
  • Redemption Frequency: Twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, offering liquidity within the interval structure.
  • Tax Efficiency: As an SIF, the fund benefits from mutual fund taxation rules, with long-term capital gains (LTCG) taxed at 12.5% plus applicable surcharge and cess after a holding period of 12 months.

Target Investor Profile

The Magnum Hybrid Long Short Fund is tailored for high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) and accredited investors seeking:

  • Diversified Exposure: Access to a blend of equity, debt, and alternative assets.
  • Risk Mitigation: Strategies to reduce volatility and enhance returns through tactical use of derivatives.
  • Tax Efficiency: Benefits of mutual fund taxation while accessing sophisticated investment strategies.

Conclusion

SBI Mutual Fund's Magnum Hybrid Long Short Fund represents a significant step in the evolution of India's investment landscape. By combining the flexibility of portfolio management services with the regulatory advantages of mutual funds, SBI offers a product that caters to the sophisticated needs of HNIs. This launch underscores the growing trend of specialized investment vehicles in India, aiming to provide investors with innovative solutions to navigate complex market dynamics.
