Airtel, Ericsson Partner to Drive Fixed Wireless Access Expansion in India

By Geeta Maurya , 11 July 2025

Bharti Airtel has joined forces with Ericsson to accelerate the deployment of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) solutions across India, aiming to deliver high-speed broadband to underserved regions. Leveraging Ericsson’s advanced 5G portfolio and Airtel’s robust network reach, this collaboration seeks to bridge digital divides by offering fibre-like internet speeds over wireless connections. As India’s demand for reliable data surges, particularly in semi-urban and rural pockets, the move underscores a strategic push toward inclusive connectivity and positions both firms to capitalize on growing opportunities in the country’s broadband landscape.

Strengthening Last-Mile Connectivity

The partnership between Airtel and Ericsson represents a concerted effort to overcome India’s long-standing last-mile connectivity challenges. While urban centers are largely wired with fibre-optic infrastructure, many smaller towns and villages remain inadequately served due to the logistical and economic hurdles of laying cables. Fixed Wireless Access emerges as a compelling alternative, utilizing existing mobile spectrum to deliver broadband directly to homes and businesses without the need for physical fibre lines.

Ericsson’s cutting-edge 5G Fixed Wireless technology enables operators like Airtel to offer multi-gigabit speeds, low latency, and improved service reliability. For consumers and enterprises alike, this means accessing next-generation applications, from cloud-based services to high-definition streaming, even in traditionally hard-to-reach areas.

Economic Potential and Market Strategy

The Indian broadband market continues to expand rapidly, driven by remote work trends, online education, and booming OTT content consumption. By deploying FWA, Airtel can tap into vast new customer segments while optimizing costs compared to traditional fibre rollouts. Analysts suggest that Fixed Wireless solutions can be rolled out nearly 50% faster, offering a competitive edge in densely populated or geographically challenging regions.

This initiative also complements Airtel’s broader digital ambitions, reinforcing its position against rivals in the high-speed data race. The tie-up with Ericsson not only provides access to proven 5G hardware and software but also strengthens network planning and optimization capabilities, ensuring efficient spectrum utilization and seamless user experiences.

Boosting India’s Digital Transformation Goals

Beyond commercial incentives, this collaboration aligns with India’s national objectives of expanding broadband penetration and fostering a digitally empowered economy. As government programs continue to emphasize digital inclusion, partnerships like Airtel and Ericsson’s can accelerate the realization of these goals by swiftly connecting rural and semi-urban communities to the digital mainstream.

Enhanced connectivity brings tangible socio-economic benefits, including improved access to e-governance, telemedicine, and online marketplaces. In turn, it stimulates local economies by empowering small businesses and entrepreneurs with reliable, high-speed internet.

Looking Ahead: Building the Network of the Future

Both Airtel and Ericsson view Fixed Wireless Access as a cornerstone of next-generation connectivity. With pilot deployments already underway in select locations, large-scale rollouts are expected to follow, laying the groundwork for widespread adoption.

As India progresses toward becoming one of the largest 5G markets globally, the synergy between advanced wireless infrastructure and strategic partnerships will be crucial. This venture not only sets the stage for robust broadband growth but also positions Airtel and Ericsson at the forefront of India’s digital evolution.
