Luxmi Group Acquires Majority Stake in UK’s Brew Tea Co to Build Global Farm-to-Cup Tea Brand

Kolkata-based Luxmi Group, the heritage tea enterprise behind the Makaibari Darjeeling brand, has acquired a controlling interest in the UK’s Brew Tea Co., a boutique tea company known for its whole-leaf offerings and direct-to-consumer subscription model. The acquisition marks Luxmi’s strategic expansion into international markets and signals a renewed focus on ethical sourcing, vertical integration, and premium tea experiences. With Brew Tea Co co-founders Phil and Aideen Kirby retaining a minority stake and continuing to lead operations, the collaboration is set to blend Luxmi’s century-old legacy with Brew Tea’s digital-first innovation—forming a global “farm-to-cup” supply chain model.

A Strategic International Expansion

The Luxmi Group, renowned for its century-long legacy in tea cultivation, has stepped into a new phase of global growth by acquiring a majority stake in Manchester-based Brew Tea Co. This acquisition positions Luxmi as a vertically integrated tea brand with both upstream control over cultivation and downstream access to premium consumers in mature markets.

Brew Tea Co, founded by entrepreneurs Phil and Aideen Kirby, has carved out a strong niche in the UK’s specialty tea sector. Known for its vibrant branding and emphasis on whole-leaf teas, the company has grown rapidly, reaching nearly 10,000 subscribers with its regular delivery of loose-leaf teas and “proper” tea bags.

This move by Luxmi marks a calculated shift toward global brand-building in the premium tea segment, combining tradition with innovation to meet modern consumer expectations.

Preserving Founders' Vision While Scaling Up

Unlike conventional buyouts where founders often exit post-acquisition, Phil and Aideen Kirby will retain a 20% equity stake and continue to lead the company’s day-to-day operations. This ensures brand continuity and preserves the founding ethos that has contributed to Brew Tea Co’s reputation for quality, transparency, and ethical sourcing.

“Their vision, hands-on leadership, and deep focus on quality remain central to Brew Tea’s growing success,” said Luxmi Group in an official statement. The founders expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting that Luxmi’s direct access to exceptional teas would allow them to elevate their customer promise even further.

By maintaining founder involvement, Luxmi ensures that Brew Tea’s distinct voice remains intact even as it expands under new ownership.

Building a Global ‘Farm-to-Cup’ Ecosystem

Luxmi Group’s strength lies in its ownership of iconic tea estates across Assam, Darjeeling, and even Rwanda. The company has built its reputation on producing high-quality, ethically cultivated teas with strong community development initiatives. This acquisition provides an opportunity to connect those estates directly with discerning international consumers, creating what Luxmi terms a “rare and complete farm-to-cup model.”

This approach goes beyond marketing; it reshapes the value chain. From plucking to packaging to direct-to-doorstep delivery, the vertically integrated model offers supply chain transparency and quality control—two major differentiators in the premium tea segment.

According to Luxmi’s Managing Director, Rudra Chatterjee, “As India celebrates 200 years since tea was first cultivated in Assam, we’re proud to bring Indian tea’s timeless craftsmanship back to global attention.” The statement underscores the cultural and historical significance of the move, aligning Luxmi’s business strategy with India’s rich tea heritage.

Implications for the Global Tea Market

This cross-border partnership is notable not only for its operational logic but also for its timing. As consumers increasingly seek ethical sourcing, traceability, and sustainability in their food and beverage choices, vertically integrated models like this are likely to gain favor.

Moreover, the UK remains one of the most discerning tea markets globally, with a strong appetite for innovation and premium blends. By acquiring an established UK brand with a loyal consumer base, Luxmi gains an instant foothold in a mature, competitive market—bypassing the typical challenges of brand-building from scratch abroad.

Additionally, Brew Tea Co’s digital-first, subscription-based model offers scalability and data-driven customer engagement—critical components for growth in a saturated global beverage landscape.

Conclusion: Blending Heritage with Innovation

Luxmi Group’s acquisition of Brew Tea Co represents more than just portfolio expansion—it marks the convergence of traditional Indian tea craftsmanship with modern retailing dynamics. This transcontinental collaboration has the potential to set new benchmarks in ethical sourcing, brand storytelling, and premium tea distribution.

As the global tea industry evolves amid shifting consumer behaviors, climate considerations, and supply chain scrutiny, such partnerships could become blueprints for the future. In this case, the blend of heritage and innovation may not only elevate both brands—but also redefine how the world experiences tea.
