Devotional Film Kannappa Stirs Controversy: Prabhas Fan Threatens Legal Action Over Deviation from 1976 Classic

Kannappa, the highly anticipated devotional film starring Vishnu Manchu and Prabhas, hit theatres on Friday to mixed reviews. While some viewers appreciated the second half of the film, the first half drew criticism for its pacing and narrative choices. The film’s divergence from the 1976 classic Bhakta Kannappa has sparked significant backlash, particularly among fans of Prabhas, with one fan threatening legal action against the film’s creator, Vishnu Manchu, over perceived false advertising. Despite the controversy, the film remains a subject of intense discussion on social media platforms.

Kannappa Sparks Backlash Over Deviation from Classic Depiction

On Friday, Kannappa, the devotional film directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh and featuring Vishnu Manchu in the title role, premiered to a mix of responses from audiences. The film, which draws inspiration from the legendary story of Bhakta Kannappa, a devout worshiper of Lord Shiva, has drawn attention for its portrayal of devotion and heroism. While the film’s second half found a more favorable reception, its first half left many viewers dissatisfied, leading to scathing critiques on social media platforms.

Mixed Reception
While Kannappa garnered attention due to its star-studded cast—including Prabhas, Akshay Kumar, Mohanlal, Kajal Aggarwal, and Preity Mukhundhan—it is the film’s reception that has taken center stage in public discourse. Many fans, particularly those of Prabhas, expected a faithful retelling of the 1976 classic Bhakta Kannappa, a film that holds nostalgic value among fans, especially as it starred Prabhas' uncle, Krishnam Raju. The film’s narrative choices, however, seem to have diverged significantly from the original, especially in the way the character of Bhakta Kannappa is portrayed.

Legal Threat from Frustrated Fan

The most dramatic fallout from the film’s release came in the form of a frustrated Prabhas fan who has threatened legal action against Vishnu Manchu for what he perceives as misleading marketing. Speaking in a video uploaded by IndiaGlitz, the fan expressed his anger, saying, “I will file a case against him (Vishnu) for giving false information. What did he say in the press? Where is Shiva in the first half? I came here after watching the Bhakta Kannappa movie, and it was nothing like that!” The fan’s disappointment stemmed from the film’s failure to meet his expectations, especially regarding the portrayal of Lord Shiva and the central character of Kannappa.

The fan was particularly upset about the film’s promotional campaign, which, according to him, presented Kannappa as a spiritual, devoted film but instead focused too much on heroism. “You promoted the movie as Bhakta Kannappa, but where is the devotion? Why are you showcasing your heroism?” the fan lamented, further adding that the film’s portrayal of Prabhas in the second half—albeit brief—was insufficient. He claimed that only 20 minutes of screen time with Prabhas was not enough to justify his excitement about the film.

Contrasting Opinions: A Fictionalized Retelling of the Legend

In the midst of this controversy, other viewers voiced contrasting opinions. One individual, who identified as someone not particularly fond of Vishnu, nonetheless expressed their appreciation for the film’s narrative and direction. Their support was further bolstered by a comment under the video, where another viewer pointed out that the film was marketed as a fictionalized account of the original Bhakta Kannappa story. They noted that a disclaimer at the start of the movie, voiced by Mohan Babu, explained that the filmmakers had researched the Bhakta Kannappa story and created a fictional adaptation.

While some fans may have been misled by the promotional material, the film’s creators made an attempt to clarify their artistic liberties, emphasizing that Kannappa was not a strict retelling of the 1976 classic but rather an inspired reinterpretation.

The Cast and Crew Behind Kannappa

Directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, Kannappa is a devotional drama that has been in development for over a decade. Featuring a robust ensemble cast, the film stars Vishnu Manchu as Kannappa, Akshay Kumar as Lord Shiva, and Prabhas as Rudra. Other notable actors include Mohanlal, Kajal Aggarwal, Sarathkumar, and Preity Mukhundhan. Despite the criticism surrounding its portrayal of devotion, Kannappa remains a major film, given its large scale and the significant investment behind it.

A Closer Look at the Devotional Genre

The devotional genre in Indian cinema has long been a favorite among viewers seeking films that evoke spirituality, emotion, and cultural reverence. Films based on religious figures or myths have often struck a chord with audiences looking for both entertainment and meaning. However, Kannappa’s deviation from the source material, coupled with its emphasis on heroism rather than devotion, has raised questions about how religious films should be approached. The film’s handling of the iconic Bhakta Kannappa character has created a divide between traditional fans of the 1976 film and those who view the new rendition as a modern adaptation.

Conclusion: Controversy or Creative Freedom?

The release of Kannappa has sparked a significant debate, both online and offline, on the balance between creative freedom and fan expectations. While some viewers find the film’s reinterpretation of Bhakta Kannappa intriguing, others are left disappointed by what they perceive as a betrayal of the original’s spirit. The controversy surrounding the film underscores the delicate line filmmakers must walk when reimagining cultural or religious narratives.

As the film continues to garner attention, it remains to be seen whether it can rise above the early criticism and find its place among the larger landscape of devotional films in Indian cinema. The debate over its portrayal of devotion versus heroism is likely to be an ongoing topic of discussion in the days to come.
