Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is poised to take a significant leap in expanding its 4G network across India by installing an additional 100,000 towers, following the successful rollout of the first batch of 100,000 towers. Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandrasekhar confirmed that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will seek Cabinet approval for the next phase of BSNL’s 4G expansion. This milestone is part of BSNL’s strategic push to improve its financial performance and accelerate its 5G and 4G offerings, utilizing indigenous technology to break reliance on foreign suppliers.

BSNL’s Expansion Plan: A Boost to India’s 4G Infrastructure

In a landmark development, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has successfully deployed the first phase of its ambitious 4G network expansion. The state-owned telecom company recently completed the installation of 100,000 4G towers, setting the stage for a broader nationwide rollout. Following this achievement, BSNL now plans to install an additional 100,000 towers, thereby increasing its network footprint and ensuring enhanced coverage across the country.

Minister of State for Communications, Pemmasani Chandrasekhar, outlined the company’s future roadmap, revealing that the next phase would require Cabinet approval before the final rollout can commence. This strategic move signals a renewed effort by BSNL to modernize its network and tap into India’s fast-growing telecommunications market.

“The Department of Telecommunications will approach the Cabinet and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek approval for an additional 100,000 towers, marking a major step forward in the expansion of BSNL’s 4G network,” Pemmasani stated.

Indigenous 4G Technology: BSNL’s Differentiation Strategy

One of the standout features of BSNL’s 4G rollout is its commitment to using indigenous technology. Unlike private telecom players such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, which rely on international suppliers like Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung, BSNL has opted for a homegrown solution to power its 4G infrastructure.

In May 2023, BSNL awarded a contract to a consortium led by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), along with Tejas Networks, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), and ITI Ltd. This strategic collaboration is designed to ensure the supply of cutting-edge 4G network equipment for the next phase of tower installations. The agreement, valued at Rs 13,000 crore, includes the supply of 4G equipment for 100,000 towers, along with a 10-year annual maintenance contract.

The government’s decision to push for self-reliance in telecommunications technology is in line with the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiative, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign entities and strengthening India’s domestic manufacturing and technological capabilities.

Technical Challenges and Improvements: BSNL’s Steady Progress

Despite early performance setbacks, BSNL’s 4G network has shown considerable improvements, as per Minister Pemmasani Chandrasekhar. Initially, there were technical challenges with the domestically developed equipment, which affected the functionality of the network. However, BSNL has addressed these issues through extensive troubleshooting and fine-tuning, with the technology now operating at optimal levels.

Chandrasekhar expressed confidence that by mid-2024, BSNL's 4G network would reach near perfection. "There were some issues with the equipment in the beginning, but now the performance has significantly improved. We expect the network to operate near perfection by the end of July or August next year,” the minister added.

This swift resolution of performance issues underscores the robustness of the indigenous technology and BSNL’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted, high-quality services for its users. As the network continues to mature, the expected improvements will help BSNL stay competitive in a market dominated by private telecom giants.

A Step Toward Financial Sustainability: Monetizing Assets

In addition to expanding its 4G network, BSNL is also exploring ways to bolster its financial position. The company aims to enhance its cash flow, which would enable it to further invest in upgrading its network to 5G and other advanced technologies. The expansion of BSNL’s 4G network, coupled with plans for monetizing its assets, is part of a broader strategy to transform the organization into a self-sustaining entity.

“We are also focusing on increasing BSNL’s cash flow, which will allow us to install more 4G and 5G equipment. This will ensure the company remains financially viable and competitive in the rapidly evolving telecom sector,” Pemmasani added.

By monetizing its assets and focusing on cost-effective domestic solutions, BSNL is poised to not only expand its network but also improve its financial health, which has long been a challenge for the state-owned telecom provider.

The Road Ahead: BSNL’s Vision for 5G and Beyond

BSNL’s ongoing 4G expansion is just the beginning. With the government’s backing, the company is positioning itself to play a significant role in India’s 5G rollout. After completing the current phase of 4G tower installations, BSNL aims to transition to 5G and offer next-generation services to its customers.

The company’s focus on indigenous technology is expected to serve it well as India moves toward 5G, a technology that promises faster internet speeds, lower latency, and increased connectivity. By ensuring that its network infrastructure is built with homegrown equipment, BSNL is aligning itself with the government’s long-term vision for a self-reliant telecommunications industry.

As the 5G market in India begins to take shape, BSNL’s early investments in upgrading its network will provide the foundation for it to be a strong player in the next phase of digital transformation.

Conclusion: BSNL’s Strategic Push for Self-Reliance and Expansion

BSNL’s ambitious plan to install 200,000 4G towers is a testament to the company’s commitment to revitalizing its network and ensuring its long-term sustainability in a highly competitive market. The use of indigenous 4G technology, coupled with a clear financial strategy to improve cash flow and monetize assets, positions BSNL for a strong comeback in the Indian telecommunications landscape.

With the government’s backing and continued investment in advanced technologies, BSNL is well on its way to becoming a key player in India’s telecom sector. As the next phase of its 4G rollout progresses and the company begins its 5G journey, BSNL’s focus on self-reliance, performance enhancement, and financial sustainability will likely define its future success.
