Oil India Launches Gas Production in Rajasthan Desert, Marking Strategic Energy Milestone

By Kirti Srinivasan , 5 June 2025

Oil India Ltd (OIL), a state-owned enterprise, has successfully initiated natural gas production from the Bakhri Tibba block, a Discovered Small Field (DSF-III) located in the arid terrain of Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district near the India-Pakistan border. The field has begun producing 67,200 standard cubic meters per day (SCMD), which is now being supplied to major downstream players including GAIL and Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri lauded the achievement as a significant step toward enhancing India’s energy self-sufficiency under frontier conditions marked by logistical and environmental challenges.

Strategic Importance of the Bakhri Tibba Block

Located in one of India’s most inhospitable and remote desert regions, the Bakhri Tibba block lies near the international border with Pakistan in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. This strategic yet challenging geography underscores the operational complexities faced by Oil India Ltd in bringing the field online.

Part of the DSF-III bid round, the Bakhri Tibba field was allocated to OIL under the government’s initiative to unlock smaller, previously discovered hydrocarbon reserves. Its activation is a demonstration of the government’s broader strategy to utilize every viable domestic resource to improve national energy security and reduce dependence on imported fuels.

Production Commencement and Output Scale

Oil India has achieved a daily production rate of approximately 67,200 SCMD of natural gas from this block, an impressive output for a small-sized discovery. The gas is currently being routed to GAIL, India’s premier natural gas transmission and marketing company, and Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RRVUNL), the state-owned power generation entity.

This early monetization not only highlights OIL’s technical competence but also reinforces the utility of the DSF framework in ensuring timely and efficient hydrocarbon production from marginal fields that were earlier considered commercially non-viable.

Government Recognition and Policy Alignment

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, acknowledged the achievement through a statement on social media platform X, calling the operation a reflection of Oil India’s “resilience, resolve and responsibility.” He emphasized that each hydrocarbon molecule produced under such extreme conditions is a contribution to India's goal of energy independence.

The minister’s remarks align with the national objective of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India), where increasing domestic energy production is a pivotal goal. The Bakhri Tibba development showcases how the public sector can rise to the challenge even under the most adverse geographic and climatic conditions.

Technical and Operational Challenges Overcome

Establishing production infrastructure in the arid desert terrain near the border poses a multitude of challenges—ranging from extreme temperature swings and limited water availability to security and accessibility constraints. Despite these hurdles, Oil India managed to deploy the necessary equipment, personnel, and logistics to bring the field online in a timely manner.

The success of Bakhri Tibba sets a precedent for future DSF developments, demonstrating that even frontier regions with marginal reserves can be economically and strategically valuable when developed with precision and commitment.

Broader Implications for India's Energy Strategy

This development is not just a standalone achievement; it signals a broader transformation in India's approach to resource optimization. By focusing on small but high-potential fields through schemes like DSF, India is diversifying its upstream energy portfolio and building resilience into its supply chain.

Moreover, the collaboration between upstream and downstream stakeholders—OIL, GAIL, and RRVUNL—illustrates the integrated nature of the energy ecosystem that the government is striving to build, where policy, production, and consumption work in synergy.

Conclusion

The successful commencement of gas production at the Bakhri Tibba block is a compelling testament to Oil India Ltd’s technical capabilities and strategic vision. It also exemplifies the Indian government's commitment to enhancing domestic energy production under challenging conditions. As the country marches toward energy self-reliance, initiatives like this will play a crucial role in shaping a more secure, sustainable, and independent energy future.
