Ethics and Exploitation: Miss England’s Exit Sparks Debate Over Miss World Pageant’s Integrity

By Nimrat , 26 May 2025

The global spotlight on the Miss World 2025 pageant—currently hosted in Telangana—has turned sharply critical following the sudden withdrawal of Miss England 2024, Milla Magee. Citing moral discomfort and disillusionment with the event’s handling, Magee departed India just nine days after arriving, accusing organizers of fostering an environment that undermined the pageant’s stated ethos of “beauty with a purpose.” Her allegations of exploitation, superficial treatment, and performative expectations have intensified scrutiny of the pageant's conduct, raising broader questions about the relevance and ethics of global beauty competitions in the modern era.

Miss England’s Exit: A Shock to the Pageant Circuit

Milla Magee, a 24-year-old contestant from England, abruptly exited the Miss World 2025 pageant hosted in Hyderabad, Telangana, citing serious ethical concerns. Her departure on May 16, following her arrival on May 7, sent shockwaves through the beauty and entertainment industries, reigniting debate about the treatment of women in such global competitions.

In an interview with The Sun upon returning to the United Kingdom, Magee shared a pointed critique of the event, characterizing it as outdated and exploitative. “It’s stuck in the past,” she stated, lamenting that the pageant contradicted its mission to promote socially conscious causes.

Allegations of Exploitation and Objectification

Magee accused organizers of treating contestants as “performing monkeys,” further revealing that she felt degraded by how she and others were showcased to affluent sponsors. “I felt like a prostitute,” she said, claiming contestants were “farmed out for entertainment.”

In addition to this, she alleged that participants were pressured to maintain a constantly polished appearance, being required to wear full makeup and formal attire, including ball gowns, from morning through the day—even during breakfast.

These statements sparked immediate backlash on social media and drew condemnation from women's rights advocates who argue that such practices contradict contemporary values of dignity, autonomy, and gender equality.

Rebuttal From Miss World Organizers

In response to the controversy, representatives from the Miss World organization dismissed Magee’s claims, asserting that her allegations were baseless and unrepresentative of the broader experience. They emphasized their longstanding commitment to empowering women and denied that contestants were subjected to coercive treatment.

However, the organization’s rebuttal has done little to quell the public discourse, especially as Magee’s claims echo long-standing criticisms of beauty pageants—namely, their emphasis on aesthetics over substance and the commodification of female participants.

Telangana Government’s Aspirations Under Scrutiny

The Telangana government had hoped that hosting the Miss World pageant would serve as a strategic move to boost the state’s global visibility and position Hyderabad as a cosmopolitan hub. Lavish hospitality and elaborate promotional campaigns were central to this effort.

Yet, this episode has cast a shadow over those ambitions. The state had already faced criticism earlier when reports emerged that local women were made to wash the feet of international contestants as a gesture of cultural welcome—an act that many labeled tone-deaf and regressive.

Magee’s departure now places further pressure on both pageant organizers and the state government to address the optics and ethical dimensions of such events.

The Larger Conversation: Relevance of Beauty Pageants in 2025

Magee’s walkout reignites a long-simmering debate about the purpose and evolution of beauty pageants in the 21st century. While many such contests now claim to promote social initiatives and female empowerment, critics argue that these claims are often undermined by archaic expectations and superficial judgments.

Her statements—charged with moral clarity—may galvanize calls for reform, or even the reconsideration of whether such events still have a place in today’s sociopolitical climate.

Conclusion: A Tipping Point for the Pageant Industry?

As the Miss World pageant continues in Telangana under mounting scrutiny, Milla Magee’s decision to publicly challenge its practices stands as a rare act of protest within an industry that often prizes silence and conformity. Whether her exit serves as a catalyst for systemic change or is dismissed as a one-off controversy remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the glitz and glamour of global beauty competitions can no longer obscure the pressing questions of ethics, dignity, and purpose.
