In a landmark collaboration aimed at ushering in a new era of digital industrialization, ABB India and the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to digitally optimize key processes at the Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha. The initiative is set against the backdrop of tightening environmental regulations and rising operational costs within the steel industry. Leveraging data-driven models and digital twin technologies, the partnership intends to modernize iron and steel production, reduce emissions, and enhance operational efficiency—all while preparing SAIL for a more competitive, sustainable future.

As global industries increasingly adopt Industry 4.0 technologies, the steel sector—long reliant on traditional manufacturing processes—is now embracing digitization as a strategic imperative. ABB India, a leader in electrification and automation, has partnered with SAIL to digitally reinvent operations at the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), one of India’s key production facilities.
The collaboration targets the creation of advanced digital models of blast furnaces and basic oxygen furnaces.
