Tata Power has announced a leadership reshuffle as part of its strategic realignment toward clean energy. Effective June 1, 2025, Sanjay Banga—currently President of Transmission & Distribution—will assume the role of President-Renewables and also take charge as CEO and Managing Director of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. The move follows the resignation of Deepesh Nanda, who stepped down due to personal reasons. Banga, a seasoned executive with nearly 30 years of experience in the power sector, brings deep expertise in operational technologies and regulatory frameworks—critical to accelerating Tata Power’s transition toward sustainable energy solutions.

Leadership Transition at Tata Power

Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated energy companies, has announced a major leadership change aligned with its strategic pivot toward renewable energy. In a regulatory filing released Wednesday, the company confirmed that Sanjay Banga will be redesignated as President-Renewables, effective June 1, 2025. In addition, Banga will take over as CEO and Managing Director of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL).

This development follows the resignation of Deepesh Nanda, the outgoing head of Tata Power’s renewable energy arm, who will vacate the role at the close of business on May 31, 2025, citing personal commitments.

The Man Behind the Mandate: Sanjay Banga

Sanjay Banga’s elevation comes at a pivotal time as Tata Power accelerates its clean energy ambitions in line with India’s net-zero goals. As the current head of the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) vertical, Banga has overseen operations across key urban centers including Mumbai, Delhi, Ajmer, and Powerlinks Transmission.

His deep-rooted experience spans over three decades in both power generation and distribution, including extensive roles in Operational Technology, Project Management, and Regulatory Affairs. These capabilities are considered essential as Tata Power navigates complex policy environments while striving to reduce Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses and improve service reliability under stringent regulatory norms.

Before his tenure at Tata Power, Banga served as the Chief Executive Officer of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (Tata Power-DDL), a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. His stewardship at Tata Power-DDL was marked by innovations in smart grid implementation and business process reengineering.

A Career Forged in the Power Sector

Banga’s professional journey began at National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) in 1989, where he worked as an Engineer Trainee, contributing to the commissioning and operations of Super Thermal Power Projects. His career took a significant turn during his tenure at Reliance Energy (formerly BSES Ltd) from 1996 to 2003, where he was involved in diverse aspects of generation including Operations, Maintenance, Design, and Project Engineering.

His appointment to lead Tata Power’s renewable energy business signals a consolidation of leadership under a proven veteran at a time when the company is scaling investments in solar, wind, and hybrid energy infrastructure.

Strategic Context: Tata Power’s Green Energy Push

Tata Power has laid out an ambitious roadmap to significantly increase its renewable energy footprint. With India committed to achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, energy majors like Tata Power are recalibrating their operational focus to align with national and global sustainability imperatives.

The reorganization and new leadership under Banga are expected to provide sharper executional agility to Tata Power’s renewable vertical, helping to expand its portfolio through both utility-scale and distributed renewable projects.

In recent quarters, Tata Power has seen growing investor interest in its green energy subsidiaries, driven by favorable regulatory support, cost competitiveness of solar technologies, and rising demand from commercial and industrial consumers for clean power.

Conclusion

The appointment of Sanjay Banga as President-Renewables and CEO & MD of TPREL underscores Tata Power’s commitment to driving leadership excellence as it navigates a rapidly evolving energy landscape. With a combination of technical acumen, regulatory foresight, and operational expertise, Banga is well-positioned to lead Tata Power into a more sustainable and energy-efficient future. As the company strengthens its renewable energy focus, this leadership transition is more than a routine shuffle—it marks a renewed emphasis on innovation, resilience, and climate responsibility in India’s power sector.
