Hero MotoCorp Faces Significant Sales Decline Amid Operational Challenges

By Nishant Verma , 3 May 2025
s

Hero MotoCorp reported a substantial 43% decline in dealer dispatches for April 2025, totaling 305,406 units compared to 533,585 units in the same month the previous year. This downturn is attributed to a three-day production halt at four of its manufacturing facilities, aimed at aligning supply chains and conducting scheduled maintenance. Despite this setback, the company maintains a consistent month-on-month increase in retail market share throughout 2025. Hero MotoCorp anticipates normalization of production and sales in May, with expectations of improved performance in the upcoming months.

Production Challenges and Strategic Adjustments

In April 2025, Hero MotoCorp implemented a planned operational strategy involving a temporary production halt from April 17 to April 19 at its Dharuhera, Gurugram, Haridwar, and Neemrana facilities. This pause was necessary to facilitate supply chain alignment and conduct scheduled maintenance and infrastructure enhancements. As a result, dealer dispatches for the month declined by 43%, totaling 305,406 units, compared to 533,585 units in April 2024.

The company has indicated that production normalization is anticipated in May, with expectations of improved performance in the upcoming months. This strategic pause underscores Hero MotoCorp's commitment to maintaining operational efficiency and long-term sustainability.

Sales Performance and Market Position

Despite the production challenges, Hero MotoCorp has maintained a consistent month-on-month increase in retail market share throughout 2025. The company continues to focus on enhancing its product portfolio and expanding its presence in the premium segment. In February 2025, Hero MotoCorp led the two-wheeler market with dispatches of 385,988 units, capturing a 28.52% market share, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

However, the company faces increasing competition from rivals such as Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI), which has been narrowing the market share gap. In February 2025, HMSI dispatched 384,000 units in the domestic market, surpassing Hero MotoCorp's 357,296 units, marking a significant shift in market dynamics.

Strategic Focus on Premium and Electric Segments

Hero MotoCorp is actively focusing on expanding its presence in the premium motorcycle and electric vehicle (EV) segments. The company has introduced new models such as the Xtreme 210 and Xtreme 250R, aiming to capture a larger share of the premium market. Additionally, Hero MotoCorp's EV brand, VIDA, continues to register growth, with dispatches of 6,200 units in February 2025, highlighting the increasing popularity of the VIDA V2 range.

To support this strategic shift, Hero MotoCorp has upgraded over 300 dealerships to sell premium motorcycles and plans to increase this number to 400 by the end of the fiscal year. The company also opened its first premium-exclusive showroom under the brand name Premia in October 2024, aiming to provide a dedicated space for its premium offerings.

Conclusion

Hero MotoCorp's 43% decline in dealer dispatches for April 2025 reflects the challenges posed by operational adjustments and increased market competition. However, the company's strategic focus on enhancing its premium and electric vehicle segments, coupled with efforts to improve operational efficiency, positions it to navigate these challenges effectively. With production normalization expected in May, Hero MotoCorp remains committed to maintaining its leadership in the Indian two-wheeler market.
