Black Friday Sales in India Jump 27% as Online Shoppers Drive Record Volumes

India’s Black Friday sales witnessed a sharp 27% year-on-year surge, marking one of the strongest festive-adjacent shopping weekends for the country’s e-commerce ecosystem, according to Unicommerce. The rise was driven by aggressive discounting, wider brand participation, and a noticeable increase in impulse-driven online spending. Apparel, beauty, and electronics led the growth momentum, with marketplaces reporting higher order volumes and stronger conversion rates. The data underscores how global retail trends are rapidly taking root in India, where digital adoption and rising disposable incomes continue to reshape consumer behaviour and accelerate the shift toward online commerce.

Online Retail Sees Robust Growth

Unicommerce’s latest assessment of Black Friday performance points to a rapidly expanding e-commerce market in India. The platform reported a 27% year-on-year rise in orders during the shopping weekend, signalling that Indian consumers are increasingly embracing international retail events. Many brands launched early-bird deals and extended the promotional period beyond a single day, contributing to sustained traffic and stronger purchase frequency.

Fashion and Beauty Dominate Purchases

Apparel and beauty products emerged as the strongest performing categories. These segments have consistently ranked among the most sought-after during discount-led events, especially as consumers look for value-driven deals on lifestyle purchases. Brand-specific promotions, influencer-led campaigns, and free-shipping offers further accelerated order placements, resulting in a notable uptick in cart conversions.

Electronics also maintained their position as a top-choice segment, buoyed by competitive pricing on smartphones, gadgets, and accessories. Retailers said that mid-range devices and personal tech saw the highest traction.

Marketplaces Outperform Brand Websites

Marketplaces recorded stronger growth compared to standalone brand websites, as consumers gravitated toward platforms offering wider assortments and deeper discounts. Unicommerce noted that multi-brand portals benefited from increased consumer trust, flexible return policies, and higher visibility for niche sellers.

However, several direct-to-consumer brands also reported meaningful gains, aided by targeted marketing and loyalty-driven shopping behaviour.

Black Friday Gains Ground in Indian Shopper Culture

While Black Friday has historically been a Western retail event, its acceptance in India has strengthened significantly over the past few years. The 27% sales surge highlights how global e-commerce trends are influencing domestic buying patterns, complementing homegrown events such as Diwali sales.

Industry analysts suggest that as retailers continue to localise promotional strategies and leverage data-driven insights, Black Friday may evolve into a cornerstone event for businesses looking to capture year-end demand.
