Born into a family with limited means, Maithili grew up watching her father work as a welder. Recently, he had begun a contractual position with the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, earning Rs. 20,000 per month. Despite the challenges, her parents supported her aspirations, and Maithili’s dedication never wavered. She pursued her dreams with discipline and purpose—emerging as a symbol of hope for her younger siblings and peers.
The Day Tragedy Struck
Maithili had been assigned to an Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London, her eighth international journey. She had spoken to her mother on the morning of the flight, promising to call again upon landing. But that call never came.
Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft crashed, claiming the lives of all ten crew members on board. Her devastated family was informed soon after, prompting a painful journey to Ahmedabad to recover her remains. On Tuesday morning, her body arrived in Mumbai on a 5:40 a.m. flight and was taken to Nhava by 11 a.m., where hundreds gathered to pay their respects.
A Village in Mourning
As Maithili’s body passed through familiar lanes wrapped in a yellow dupatta—a tribute to her love for Krishna and Radha—friends, neighbors, and political leaders like Panvel MLA Prashant Thakur and Uran MLA Mahesh Baldi lined the streets to honor her memory.
The most emotional tributes came from her family. “Daughter, I never wanted to give this farewell to you,” cried her mother, Pramila Patil. Her uncle, Jitendra Chavan, recalled how she had persevered through adversity to reach heights no one in their family had imagined.
The impact of her life could be felt across the village. At Lady Khatun Marium School, where Maithili studied from nursery to class 12, teachers and students formed a solemn line. Principal Daisamma Paul described her as a loving, responsible, and driven student—one who walked more than 20 minutes each day to school and served as house captain in Class 11. Maithili was also a devoted elder sister. She had been working diligently to fund the education of her younger siblings—Drishti, who is currently pursuing a BTech degree, and her younger brother, who recently completed Class 10.
