India's busiest aviation hub, Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi, is poised to expand its role as a critical global connector. Currently handling around 22 million annual passengers, IGIA expects this figure to surpass 24 million in the next 1–2 years. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which operates the facility, is actively pursuing strategic expansion into Asia-Pacific markets, including Australia and New Zealand, to boost international connectivity. With infrastructure upgrades underway—such as terminal maintenance and runway enhancements—the airport is aligning itself with the demands of a growing global travel ecosystem.
Passenger Growth Signals Surge in International Demand
IGIA currently manages an annual passenger volume of approximately 22 million, of which around 5.5 million are connecting travelers—a strong indicator of the airport’s growing role as a transit hub for both international and domestic passengers. Projections indicate a further increase to more than 24 million passengers annually in the near term, underscoring sustained demand and increased air travel post-pandemic. This anticipated growth reflects the resilience of India’s aviation sector and Delhi’s strategic location as a major node in global air traffic routes.
Strategic Focus on Asia-Pacific Expansion
To strengthen its international positioning, DIAL is in active dialogue with carriers and authorities across the Asia-Pacific region, particularly targeting Australia and New Zealand. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been signed with Auckland Airport, signaling the first step in establishing direct or enhanced connectivity between India and New Zealand. This aligns with broader economic and cultural exchanges between India and the Asia-Pacific, supporting both business and tourism-related travel flows.
Infrastructure Developments to Support Future Demand
With expansion comes the need for upgraded infrastructure. As part of the ongoing development plan:
- Terminal 2 (T2) will be temporarily shut down starting next week for maintenance and modernization works.
- The airport is also investing in runway upgrades, ensuring that capacity and safety standards keep pace with growing traffic volumes.
These upgrades are expected to improve turnaround times, enhance passenger experience, and support wide-bodied aircraft operations on longer-haul routes.

Delhi Airport already boasts connections to 70 international destinations, offering robust coverage across major global regions. According to CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, DIAL is “well advanced into becoming a global gateway,” a statement reflecting both ambition and groundwork being laid across operational, strategic, and diplomatic channels.
