AI and Data Analytics Can Transform India’s Power Sector, Says CAG Murmu

Artificial intelligence and data analytics are emerging as critical tools to improve efficiency, transparency, and financial discipline in India’s power sector, according to Girish Chandra Murmu. Addressing the challenges facing electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, Murmu highlighted how advanced technologies can strengthen governance, reduce losses, and enhance decision-making. With the sector grappling with operational inefficiencies and financial stress, the adoption of data-driven systems is increasingly seen as essential. The remarks underscore a broader policy push to modernize infrastructure and ensure sustainable growth in one of India’s most vital industries.

Technology as a Catalyst for Power Sector Reform

Murmu emphasized that AI and advanced analytics can play a transformative role across the power value chain. From demand forecasting and predictive maintenance to fraud detection and real-time monitoring, technology-driven solutions offer the potential to significantly reduce technical and commercial losses. For a sector handling large-scale assets and complex operations, such tools can improve both reliability and cost efficiency.

Strengthening Governance and Financial Oversight

As the country’s chief auditor, Murmu underscored the relevance of data analytics in enhancing audit quality and financial oversight. Automated analysis of large datasets enables early identification of anomalies, inefficient spending, and revenue leakages. This, he said, can improve accountability and ensure that public funds, measured in Rs., are deployed more effectively across power utilities.

Addressing Structural Challenges

India’s power sector has long faced challenges including high transmission losses, delayed payments, and stressed balance sheets at distribution companies. Experts believe AI-enabled systems can support better billing accuracy, targeted subsidy delivery, and improved consumer service. Murmu noted that technology adoption must be paired with institutional capacity building to deliver lasting results.

Policy Signal and Sector Outlook

The CAG’s remarks signal growing institutional support for digital transformation in core infrastructure sectors. As policymakers and utilities explore AI-led solutions, the focus will be on scalable implementation, data integrity, and cybersecurity. If executed well, analysts say technology could help place India’s power sector on a more sustainable and financially resilient footing.
