In a pivotal move aimed at regaining its competitive footing, Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) officially unveiled its 5G services in India, initiating coverage from Mumbai. Despite a delayed start compared to telecom giants Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, VIL has set ambitious targets to expand its 5G footprint to over 100 cities and towns across 17 telecom circles within the next three years. Initially offered as an unlimited add-on for existing customers with plans priced at Rs. 299 or higher, this service marks a strategic push by the struggling telecom player to curb subscriber churn and revive growth.

Vodafone Idea’s 5G launch commences in Mumbai, with subsequent rollouts planned in major cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Patna, and Mysore by April. Following this, the telco intends to bring services to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, and Chennai. The company’s Chief Technology Officer, Jagbir Singh, emphasized Vodafone Idea’s robust financial preparedness to execute this ambitious expansion.
Vodafone Idea anticipates targeting urban centers with high penetration of 5G devices, strategically deploying network resources in commercial hubs, residential clusters, and key urban areas to meet anticipated demand.
Competitive Landscape: Navigating a Crowded 5G Market
The Indian telecom industry’s competitive dynamics shifted significantly following the entry of Reliance Jio’s aggressive 5G rollout in late 2022. By December 2024, Jio had accumulated over 170 million 5G subscribers, while Bharti Airtel also established a formidable user base of nearly 120 million subscribers.
In contrast, Vodafone Idea, burdened by financial stress, lagged significantly behind. However, this delayed entry provides the company with a crucial advantage—deploying advanced, matured network technologies, potentially enhancing reliability and user experience compared to earlier adopters.

Singh highlighted the advantage of launching later, emphasizing that Vodafone Idea benefits from the deployment of the latest network management technologies developed over the past two years. Currently, millions of Vodafone Idea’s subscribers opt for data-intensive plans priced at Rs. 299 and above. By offering an introductory unlimited 5G service to these users, VIL seeks to showcase the enhanced quality and value of its upgraded network, thereby encouraging subscriber loyalty and reducing churn.
Financial Investments and Capex Synergies
Vodafone Idea is making substantial financial commitments, with a planned capital expenditure of Rs. 50,000–55,000 crore over the next three years. Roughly half this amount is explicitly allocated to 5G expansion, with the remaining funds earmarked for enhancing the capacity and reach of the existing 4G network.
Singh emphasized the critical synergies between 4G enhancements and the ongoing 5G rollout. With concurrent infrastructure upgrades, Vodafone Idea expects significant cost efficiencies that may help improve the overall financial viability of the project.

Despite its transformative potential, monetizing 5G services in India remains complicated. Significant infrastructure costs, price-sensitive consumers, and limited adoption scenarios pose formidable challenges. Nonetheless, Singh identified substantial growth opportunities within specific domains such as telemedicine, smart city IoT solutions, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) gaming, and educational applications.
Vodafone Idea’s strategy will involve capitalizing on these emerging use cases, positioning its 5G offerings not merely as faster data solutions but as integral platforms driving innovation, productivity, and broader societal benefits.
Future Outlook: Market Potential and Adoption Trends
The Ericsson Mobility Report predicts India’s total 5G subscriber base will surge nearly threefold, reaching approximately 970 million users by 2030, representing 74% of the country’s total mobile subscribers. With sustained growth in 5G smartphone penetration, Vodafone Idea remains optimistic about strong service adoption rates, particularly in urban areas and among data-intensive users.
Although Singh refrained from specifying exact subscriber targets or coverage metrics for Vodafone Idea’s first operational year, the company clearly recognizes the immense long-term market potential for widespread 5G adoption.
